AKG N90Q paper - Characterizing the Frequency Response of Headphones - A New Paradigm
An intruiguing paper was published in May 2015 that apparently discusses the science behind AKG's latest $1500 flagship and possibly the latest JBL Everest headphones. I'm surprised that there's been absolutely no press for the paper and not much more for the headphone (get on this Tyll!). ...- JMS

Harman headphone research incarnated as AKG N90Q?
At CES 2015 Harman announced their new AKG90Q, with an intriguing, perhaps revolutionary, feature: Given the recent research Harman has been doing in headphone target frequency response curves, my guess is that the system will actively apply DSP to equalize the target response (to one...- JMS

Measurement based equalization of HD650, HD700
There's been some recent discussion over in the Sound Science forum about new research on the measured and subjective response of headphones, including a revelatory paper (summarized here) on the subjective impressions of equalized frequency responses. I've been doing a bit of measurements...- JMS

AES2013: Listener Preferences for Different Headphone Target Response Curves
Sean Olive, Todd Welti, and Elisabeth McMullin of Harman have recently published another intriguing paper in subjective headphone sound quality. Following their previous paper "Relationship between Perception and Measurement of Headphone Sound Quality" discussed in this thread, they have...- JMS

HRTF and binaural measurements of Sennheiser HD650, HD700, AKG K550
In the thread in this forum on the AES2012 paper about perception and measurement of headphone sound quality, I asked the Harman research team whether they have considered measuring desired headphone frequency response using loudspeaker playback on a dummy head as reference, similar to what is...- JMS

AES 2012 paper: "Relationship between Perception and Measurement of Headphone Sound Quality"
An interesting paper from Sean Olive of Harman (AKG) is set to be published at AES2012 in a couple weeks that should be of great interest to folks in this forum: http://www.aes.org/events/133/broadcast/?ID=3181 ------------------------ P10-1 The Relationship between Perception and...- JMS

Storage/display case for headphones?
Are there any good storage/display solutions out there for large headphones? I have my amp/headphones on a desk at the office, and when I'm done I want to put it in a box so it won't get dusty and the wires wont be all over my desk. Currently I'm using a $3 box from walmart to store $1400...- JMS

Sennheiser HD800 Impressions and Reviews
I'm seriously considering getting HD800's, and my decision will be based entirely on the member reviews of this forum. However, I have a hard time sifting through literally thousands of posts spread across two ginormous threads. Can we please have a thread of only impressions and reviews from...- JMS

PPA distortion
I've always found my PPA to sound shrill and metallic, but couldn't figure out why. I thought maybe I screwed something up, but it seemed to measure well, as on tangent's site. Recently I did another comparison using RMAA5.4, and I noticed one measurement, THD, in which the PPA measures worse...- JMS

My PPA: measures well, sounds bad. HELP!
I built my PPA about 3 months ago, using basically the standard recommended configuration/parts. I always thought it sounded a little thinner than my META42 (also built to standard configuration/parts), but figured it was due to the improved stereo separation. I hadn't done a serious subjective...- JMS

PPA multiple inputs
I'm building a PPA and I want to have 2 sets of input RCA jacks. Is it OK to tie together all the input grounds and switch only the signals with a DPDT switch? I intend both inputs to come from home stereo components. Would this cause ground loop problems and such? I'm using the Hammond case...- JMS

Budget component alert: $30 computer speakers
I found some great computer speakers for $30 that I thought I'd share with you guys. I never liked the 3-piece satellite/woofer systems because the frequencies around 100-200 hz cannot possibly be adaquately covered by either the woofer under your desk, or the little single-driver satellites...- JMS

stopping stepped attenuator pop
My fake ALPS stepped attenuator makes the speakers/headphones pop when turning. Sounds like it's a break-before-make type. Can I stop this pop by wiring a resistor (say 500Kohm) in parallel, and would there be any bad side effects from doing this?- JMS

META42 hiss when used as preamp
I have a stock META42 in a Hammond case, and it works fine without any audible hiss/hum using headphones. When I try to use this thing as a preamp I get a buzz that sounds like a 60hz hum, and also some hiss. Is this a ground loop problem, and how can I fix it? I'm using a fake ALPS pot. Does...- JMS
