Brainwavz HM5 vs. NAD Viso HP50
Currently use M50s at work, with the coax pad mod, out of a Cute Beyond amp. I like them a lot, best closed headphones I've tried, the alleged v-shape freq response is excellent in light of the fact I listen at low volumes. Anyway, I'm wanting a second pair of closed headphones so I can have one...- Nepenthe

any idea why we don't see more headphones using AMT drivers?
There's only one headphone I know of, the Precide Ergo, that uses an AMT for each driver. There are dynamics, multi-driver dynamics (new JVCs and I think some of the "surround sound" headphones), BAs, electrostats, and planars, and although I'm not aware of any production models I know some...- Nepenthe

Open headphone users -- how do you manage?
So beyond the noises I create myself, through movement, digestion, respiration, circulation, and nervous system electricity (also see this: http://www.head-fi.org/t/582983/inexpensive-mod-gives-nice-quality-increase-for-at-home-critical-listening), here is a partial list of the noises that...- Nepenthe

Looking for an inexpensive headphone in the $20 range for a bulk buy (quantity 200+)
We issue these horrible little Labtec headphones to our processing reps at my company. These things are really only good for reviewing phone quality recordings a few minutes at a time. The sound that comes to mind recalls the worst walkmen headset you remember from the 80s, and they start to...- Nepenthe

Inexpensive mod gives nice quality increase for at-home critical listening
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002XO7ICO/ref=oh_o02_s00_i00_details Or any skinny pillow, but this one with the microbeads is great because it squishes down under my spine and then supports my head just enough that the earcups are not touching the couch / recliner / pillow or whatever I...- Nepenthe

hifi amp in the $150-$400 range that includes balance and tone controls?
Is there such a thing? The preamp stage on most amps I've seen is pretty bare-bones -- a gain selector and a volume control is about it. A balance control (for very subtle balancing) would be great, as would a pretty basic tone control (or two). Small enough to take places (not...- Nepenthe

What is your normal listening "position" ?
I'm wondering if I'm abnormal here and appreciate all responses. Also if there's already a 200-reply thread on this please let me know and I'll go away. I spend some of my time listening at very low volume at the office, but most of my listening time at home is spent lying on my couch soaking...- Nepenthe

What I'm really looking for
I'm a little drunk. Dogfish Head Palo Santo Marron, an exquisitely tasteful 24 proof ale, if you must know. Unbelievable "beer." Anyway, the best music I ever heard, by a light year (that's a very very long distance for you neophytes), was when I had ESS AMT-1 speakers in my bedroom and...- Nepenthe

Headphones with a natural "sideways D shaped" frequency response?
Long time, no post. These days, I mostly listen to Bose QC2s at work ( http://www.amazon.com/review/R2DILGPAJWNDSN/ref=cm_cr_rdp_perm ) and Denon D1000s or Senn HD497s at home, so my audiophile days are behind me for the moment. I do have a Cute Beyond headphone amp and quite a bit of my home...- Nepenthe

The Goal Expand my musical horizons, find some outstanding new music The Rules --the artist must be new to me --the artist must have released a proper album during year 2009 --the artist must have at least three proper album releases including the 2009 release --I must order a "middle... -
New ESS AMT-1
http://www.essspeakersusa.com/Press1.jpg I'm planning to buy a pair of these. They'll be driven by a Carver TFM-35 amp and a Harman/Kardon HK 3480 receiver as a preamp and supplemented by subwoofer (right now a Velodyne CT-120, soon to be either a single or dual REL subs). I owned a 1970s...- Nepenthe

What's on tap for 2008?
Two questions: What are you looking forward to for 2008? What should people know is coming out in 2008 so they can be excited too? I'll get it started: Black Mountain: I downloaded a new track off Stereogum and thought it was impressive, so their upcoming album is one to watch Music... -

Best of 2007
If there is another thread already, let me know. Otherwise, is it not time for the best of 2007 thread? Here are my top three: I chose these three because although i bought a good number (35 or so) of 2007 albums during 2007, these three are the ones I had by far the most FUN with... -
Help me identify this tune (with MIDIs!)
I've heard this twice. The second time was in my company's gym on a Sunday morning after I changed the XM Radio over to XMU. It sounds like it could be The New Pornographers or Stars, but I don't think it is. I've attached two midi files inside a zip file. Laugh at my ragged MIDI composing... -
Question about Rock Band, Guitar Hero, etc.
I've never played either of these lines of games and probably won't have the opportunity any time soon. I've played guitar for 17 years though. If they had a version of the game that used an actual stringed guitar with MIDI pickups, I'm sure I'd do well. Anyway, the question is about the... -
in ear phones for my boss, under $60
Today my boss, knowing that I'm a big headphone listener, asked me to come up with "the best earphones from $40 to $60." After clarifying, he's wanting "in ear monitors" which I have absolutely no experience with. But I told him I'd figure something out. I don't know a whole lot about his...- Nepenthe

HD595 - 7509HD - D1000 - questions
So I bought the Sony SA1000 a few weeks ago. I owned the SA5000 two years ago but sold it after about a month of ownership. I decided on the SA1000 for the similar sound signature and lower price, but I realize some real drawbacks. My other phones are the Bose QC2 -- which I use exclusively at...- Nepenthe

Listening 30 hours a week on $3 headphones
I work for a large brokerage and investment firm. I work in a building that houses 3500 of our employees, many of them phone reps or processors. I myself am a director in a support/technology division, but I work on a floor with mostly processing reps (people who process requests and paperwork...- Nepenthe

Well, does it? I'm talking about with a significant other or possible SO, not friends. And I'd like to leave this question as general as possible and open to interpretation. Personal anecdotes and all comments appreciated! -
New Loud Family!
What a great Thanksgiving surprise. "What If It Works," the sixth studio album from Scott Miller's second lifetime of work, The Loud Family, is due to be released in January 2006! I had no idea. After 2000's Attractive Nuisance I thought it was really over. I was just hammering on my guitar this... -

four reasons I'm selling SA5000
And I'm not trying to stir anything up. And these reasons may seem odd to other owners. I generally really like the sound of these headphones. They're really nice. But: 1) the cord is so noisy: http://www6.head-fi.org/forums/showthread.php?t=145432 It's funny that Salt Peanuts...- Nepenthe
