How do you keep the two pairs leading up to each driver from the y-split to not untwist themselves over time?

Not sure what you mean by "fabric with the copper wire". Do you mean tiny "hairs" ? Could also be that you need to tin the ends if there is a paint coating over the copper.

What you can do to identify which color is left/right/ground is to cut the cable off a couple inches above the plug, remove the insulation and use a multimeter to see which color is connected to which part of the plug itself (most(all?) multimeters have a function where it will beep when the two...
