How to hook up a condenser microphone to the PC?

So, long story short is that I'm a newb, and wanted to toy around with a condenser microphone for general purpose PC usage, so I bought the Audio-Technica AT2020. The box arrived today. 1 - There's no desktop stand, so I'll have to buy one. 2 - The connector on the microphone is XLR. My...

    CIAudio VDA-2 arrived!

Well, after the comments I've heard about this DAC (even though there weren't that many people that had it), I just had to try it out. I ordered it on the 26th and it got here on January 7th (I live in Canada). I've been spending the last 3 hours listening right after coming home and taking it...

Good place to get the ESI Juli@ in Canada?

I'm considering getting this card for Vista 64-bit support, but I only see one distributor on the ESI site for Canada. I'll be contacting them later to ask them about it, but does anyone know of any other stores selling this card that serve Canada or are in the US but ship cheaply enough to...

    MP3 -> WAV converter?

What is the free standard for MP3 to WAV converters? I'm having a little trouble with slow MP3 seeks with cue files, so I'm looking to convert all my MP3 to WAV, then WAV to FLAC. I already have FLAC frontend, but it won't take MP3 files, so I need to convert them to WAV first. Thanks.

Are there unamped analog outputs on the Panasonic XR55?

I was thinking of getting this receiver for both headphone and speaker purposes. I would be hooking up my soundcard via digital coaxial to the Panasonic XR55. Then for speakers, I would use the speaker outputs (which would be amped). For headphones, I'm not sure if the XR55 can serve only as a...

Decent DAC with at least 2 unamped outputs?

Does anyone know of a solution for this? I hate having to switch cables everytime I do a change from speaker to headphone or vice versa. I would appreciate suggestions in the $200-$600 price range. Thanks.

    SSRC resampler for foobar2000 ver0.92

Has there been an SSRC resampler DSP developed for foobar2000 0.92 yet? 0.83 special installer used to include it by default, but ever since the new version, I've had to go fishing for plugins.

AT headphone with the largest soundstage?

Out of A500, A900, A900 LTD, A1000, AD2000, W1000, W5000, W2002, and L3000, which one has the largest soundstage? I know the A900 LTDs don't have the soundstage width to compare to my DT880s, but is there an AT headphone that does? I'd hate, however, to have to resort to a lower end AT can than...

    Warcraft 2 soundtrack music?

I've been a PC gamer since 1992-1993, and out of all the games I've played, the Warcraft 2 music has really stood out to me the most. It's the one game I can still play where the music itself makes me feel both great and nostalgic at the same time. The medieval atmosphere is just very well set...

Athena B2.2 for $299 CDN -- good bang for the buck?

I see this deal at future shop in Canada, and I'm just wondering for those that have heard it, is that good bang for the buck? I'm quite aware that there may be better deals by getting them from the US, but there may also be a customs fee involved.

What's the concensus on software upsampling at head-fi?

Software upsampling....something like using the foobar2k SSRC resampler set to a higher sampling rate like 96K, for example. What kind of sound differences do people note?

Closed headphones one step up from DT770s or A900s?

Any suggestions on this? I know of a lot of people recommend the above... but what about those looking to take the next step from there?

Subwoofer suggestions to match the Swans M200?

I'm looking to get a set of Swans M200 sometime within the next few months, but I'll also need a subwoofer to go with it. I have a Future Shop gift card for $30 (sort of like Best buy but in Canada), and I'm wondering what I should go with: Is there anything in this selection that's worth its...

Comparison: Beyerdynamic DT880 vs. Labtec Elite-840

Alright, so, since I've had a bit of listening time tonight, and I also own both of these headphones, I will do a mini-comparison of the two. The Labtecs were given to me as a gift and have a retail value within the tens of dollars range (CAD$). The DT880s are $210 USD shipped from Meier. From...

Music Encoding -- what to believe?

Someone tells me that when you buy a CD, the tracks on the CD are encoded at 128 kbps, and that you decompress it to higher bitrates to make it sound better. Now, in all my experience and discussions on any music forum or likewise, I've never heard of decompressing the music to a higher...

As I listen to DT880s, I finally understand the meaning of deep bass...

I'm still unamped, although that's about to change soon, and I'm still running it off of a Revo, but I have to comment that the bass feels...different from that of my MS-1s. It's not as punchy, but gives you sometimes the feeling that it's rumbling in your internals. I feel this more often when...

What exactly is the loop out feature used for?

Anyone? Would it be useful for a simple source->amp->headphone setup?

Closed headphones with best external noise reduction?

<$250 and the best external noise reduction (so other people can't hear things while I'm listening to my music). Also, how would such headphones compare to the external noise reduction on IEMs?

Just got my Beyer DT880s today from Meier Audio!

Well, it's been a month and a week in shipping, and finally it's here. Unfortunately, I don't have any other headphones to compare with (I sold my MS-1s about 1 month ago so I've sort of forgotten what the two sound like). I'm also running these phones directly out of the headphone out for the...

How do you compare bass between two headphones?

I've always found it somewhat easier to compare a few main characteristics of headphones such as the following: -how muffled they sound -the quality and harshness of their treble -how high the treble goes but I've never understood how people compare bass when they say that so and so is a...

Anyone have opinions on unamped DT880?

I'm a few hours away from clicking the order button on these headphones, but I haven't read too much about them unamped. I won't have the budget for an amp until a few months later (looking to get an M^3 with STEPS), but how are they unamped? Coming from my MS-1s, would they sound disappointing...

Revo 5.1 how much % of the way to Audiophile 192?

From what I've read, they both seem to have warmer sound signatures as compared to the Emu series so I think they're comparable in some way. Clarity-wise and overall sound-wise, how much of the way do you think the Revo 5.1 is to the AP 192?

What do you call the sound of hitting a (is it snare)?

I'm just listening to some electronic music and you know how there's the bass with a thumb, then, there's also the sound of hitting a certain instrument which produces a "ch" sound. I'm wondering what that would be called and whether it would fit under treble, or mids. It doesn't seem very...

Where to find the cheapest DT880s?

I remember alot of people talking about getting these Beyers at around $225 US. Is that deal still available? AFAIK, TTVJ is $279 and Headroom is $259 (with 10% discount for contributing members). Any other sources? Edit: It seems like TTVJ is 10% off, which makes it $251.

    Amping MS-1s worth the money?

I currently only have MS-1s, but I'm wondering if getting an amp for it would be worth the money. As of right now, I only have about $200 US saved up, but with some time, I could probably double that. I'm currently looking at powering a set of Beyerdynamic DT880s (that I will get later on when I...
