And why using a usb to i2s converter? Just get a streamer which has I2S as native output, like my Pink Faun streamer.... it has usb and I2S output..i tried both on my heavily upgraded pink faun 2.24Q , which has usb and I2S inputs and the I2S implementation on the dac sounded much better then...

about the hek needing power..well..this is my experience..i now use a very powerful headphone amp with high end sound quality and i can confirm: the better the amp the better the hek sounds..and it looks like there is no roof to what the hek is capable off...it scales hugely well..but the hek v1...

I got my hek v1 with the velour backed pads and they sounded fine..only after i got to use the new pads (polyester) i heard differences: 1. Low sounds more punchier 2. Sound a tiny bit roomier but also a tiny bit darker 3. Feels hotter on ur ears (more itchy then velours) In total..difference...

maybe you can try the toxic cables sw22 or hydra18 as alternative? I use the sw22 in balanced version..and it sounds stunning with my HEK..and they are hugely less expensive..lolz

The he1000 scales hugely when you use better and better gear..amps..dacs..cables...powersupplies..sources (NAS/ streamin stuff)...isolation devices...filtering stuff...this headphone reacts on every change in ur rig..its incredible!

I swear on the 'regular' sw22 for the HEK/ code-x/he-6/ he500..and i think its within your price range..but be prepared to wait months..but its worth it!

I had code-x and that phone scaled hugely when paired with very high quality gear..and i mean the better the gear the better the sound..there was no ceiling..and i get a feeling the HEK is same kind of headphone..my 'high end' custom PaG is a VERY powerful headphone amp with HUGE reserves...

Or u can go the classic way (as alternative to tube)..an opamp-based amplifier..but one thing i myself found out also..the hek needs quality power..just like the he6 and code-x to shine

Try to contact blue circle audio..canadian based audio company...they make custom amps for everyones need..the owner went through same road as fang from hifiman..both perfectionists extreme who care more whats come out in musical bless then how it looks. BC builts its amps like a tank though...

Got my sw back..am stunned...no way my gear could sound any better then with the famous code-x! Well.. a new member of the family just proved it...there is more in heaven then the code-x..and my sw22 helps bigtime...have a looksie at my humble family :-)

To be honest..i dont know..you have to ask him..i think hifiman partly solved it while making the cups thinner and the new ultra psds and some extra dampening.but as i just said...dont know..for the v1 it works..well..as long my brain is not messing with me..over the next weeks i will have some...
