unfortunately the compete answer involves you preamp...laptop in this case. short is best...i run a 12'/3 meter run, and my preamp manufacturer recommends that as the max to not experience degridation of signal quality. in real terms i wouldn't worry too much, but a laptop is a beast i am not...

i lived with the x-can v3 for over year...at the end i greatly prefered the singlepower amp for a little more, but the mf still sounded really delightful for the money. i think its only weakness lies in the bass region...too bass heavy from my experience.
