    Absolute Bluetooth Volume in Android

I've noticed that most of the time, audiophile misconceptions are a matter of scale. There's an assumption that better numbers mean better sound, but the truth is that some things are big and obvious, and some things are so small there's no way any human could perceive them. It helps to know...

The soundbar is Hisense U5120G. It does something weird with DTS. I think if you turn on DTS, it overrides Atmos upscaling.

HISENSE 8K You have to turn on Dolby Vision in the menus every time you want to use it. When you insert a disk with Dolby Vision, it appears in the menu, but it isn't turned on by default. It defaults to the picture mode you've specified for that input.

When I put in a Dolby Vision disc, my TV doesn’t play it in Dolby Vision unless I go into the menus and turn Dolby Vision on. When I eject the disc it defaults back to HDR 10. If I put the disc back in, it plays it in HDR 10 unless I go in and turn on Dolby Vision in the menu again. The default...

My TV doesn’t automatically decode Dolby Vision. You have to go into the menus and switch it on and off manually. That’s what I’m trying to say, but maybe I’m not stating it clearly. It’s the same with DTS X Neural and Dolby Atmos. If you turn on DTS in the menu, you don’t get Atmos decoding and...

My tv set requires manually turning Dolby vision on for each play. It’s deep in the menus, and after looking at a Dolby vision movie with and without, it just isn’t worth it. The difference is negligible and I prefer my settings in some respects to the Dolby vision defaults. There are so many...

The DTS option doesn’t create a sound field like the Dolby one does. It’s more discrete and not as full sounding. So I leave the DTS off and use Dolby instead. Dolby Vision is a pain in the ass. I have to toggle it on or off manually. I don’t see any improvement using it, so I keep that off.

I just discovered a semi-hidden menu on my soundbar. It turns on DTS X Neural, which is apparently DTS’s version of Atmos. It has further controls to dynamically compress for night mode and to boost the vocals, but I left those off. I tried several different kinds of tracks with it, and...

Yah, it took a lot of trial and error because there were presets that were undocumented. The same goes for the image adjustment. Controls on TVs aren’t as easy to pin down as they used to be.

I’m very happy with the sound. It sounds quite a bit better in surround mode, kind of like open headphones, it just doesn’t put sounds to the side or behind me unless I’m in the exact right spot. It depends on bouncing sound from the top and sides of the soundbar off walls and the ceiling. The...

Today I got the soundbar to output pretty doggone good surround sound. Oddly enough, it wasn’t an Atmos or even multichannel recording… it was the 50 Years of Devo CDs. I leaned forward while it was playing and suddenly it popped into surround. But I had to hold my head still leaning forward and...

    Absolute Bluetooth Volume in Android

What’s the difference between automatically normalizing the track with absolute volume, or normalizing manually using your volume control. It seems to me that auto normalization wouldn’t make any difference, and it would make the levels consistent. But maybe I’m misunderstanding because I don’t...

Let’s extend some graciousness to folks who see dead people, believe the Earth is flat and think the moon is made of green cheese too. I’ll graciously allow those people to believe whatever they want. But that doesn’t mean I can’t point out their errors to them and ask what they base their...

I would think that a hearing aid in the ear would interfere with HRTF and perhaps timing a bit. The main way you sound locate would probably be with head movement.

The Doppler Illusion, why is it so hard to understand?

I don’t seem to be subject to the illusion. I don’t hear a change in pitch on approach, just volume.

The Doppler Illusion, why is it so hard to understand?

Ok. I knew there had to be a physical aspect. I have demonstration records of steam locomotives that are vivid examples.

They may affect us, like with sonic weapons and that kind of thing. But with home audio, we’re talking about sitting on the couch listening to music for enjoyment. There’s no reason to believe that super audible frequencies affect us in any way that improves sound for that purpose.

I wouldn’t think acoustic detection of directionality wouldn’t apply when you’re wearing headphones where the sound source is right over the ears. That kind of directional cue probably wouldn’t record the same way it sounds in real life with all the other directional and depth cues. Does that...
