REVIEW: Decware Select Zen CSP2 Tube Headphone Amp

Yes, PCC88s can be subbed into amps which can run 6DJ8 tubes.   The PCC88s ( 7DJ8) are sonically similar to the 6DJ8.   Joe's Tube lore can provide useful insights on the 6DJ8 family http://www.audioasylum.com/scripts/d.pl?audio/faq/joes-tubes.html   The Stock Russian tubes ( 6N1P) are...

REVIEW: Decware Select Zen CSP2 Tube Headphone Amp

JDM did a very good 5Y3 rectifier shootout over here. http://www.decware.com/cgi-bin/yabb22/YaBB.pl?num=1208182422/0   Like JDM, I've also used a Amperex 6922 tube in front so I tend to agree with his findings.   The RCA 5Y3 and Tung Sol 5Y3 appear to be on top of the list.   I know...

Sony MDR-EX1000 and EX600: First Impressions

I recently used my MDR-EX1000 on 2 flights and want to share my experience. On the Airbus A380, movies had a wonderful surround sound effect. They reminded me of the surround sound systems found in cinemas. Highly recommended if you are flying on one. However, on the Boeing 777-200 (ER), there...

    Schiit Lyr Tube Rollers

LOL Hi HK Sends! :) Perhaps it is time to start a new bootleg tube rolling page. Ever wondered how the use of Champagne or a few shots of jack Daniel's will help improve the sound? ;)

    Schiit Lyr Tube Rollers

Dear fellow tube lovers, For many years, I've only been using 99% medicinal alcohol to clean my tube pins. They are all squeaky clean. This simple solution works for me. The stuff also evaporates naturally and no further cleaning is required. This also works for any audio connectors (RCA) or...

REVIEW: Decware Select Zen CSP2 Tube Headphone Amp

This should be a worthwhile upgrade! I have the new CSP3 with the beeswax caps and the CSP2+ with normal caps. The beeswax caps do make a difference. The CSP3 sounds warmer and more organic. The music seems to be more emotionally satisfying.

    Schiit Lyr Tube Rollers

Hi, Yes the photo in your link shows the single getter design. These are newer tubes made in the late 1970s to 1980s. There is no definite rule as to where the =\= symbol might show up. The =\= symbol sometimes appears on the internal metal plate which you asked earlier. For older tubes, it...

    Schiit Lyr Tube Rollers

Ok. Based on your photos, those tubes were made in either 1969 or 1970. For Siemens tubes, there are sometimes 3 digit numbers printed near the "made in Germany" label. The last two digits "70" suggests 1970. The tubes in your photos have the double stage "o" getter support. In the early 1960s...

Hi, I can't seem to open up the link you provided. Are you able to save the photo and post it as an attachment on this forum? I should be able to provide an answer then. Cheers !

If your tubes have gray shields, then the tubes were made in 1969, that's the "9" part. The A4 is a production code for the 4th series. A0 was the earliest production series run, A1, A2..... and so on.

    Schiit Lyr Tube Rollers

This depends on the tube tester, hence my suggestion to ask the seller directly. Some testers can test both mA and GM readings, so the "/" could refer to those. Alternatively, if the tube tester only measures either mA or GM, then the "/" could mean left / right of 1st tube, left / right of...

    Schiit Lyr Tube Rollers

In the old days, there wasn't any consistent standard for old tube testers. E.g. The minimum good standard could be 50% or 60% of GM life left. Or even 80% for serious audiophiles, my own personal reference standard. Usually 50% tubes sound like crap. So every tester has its own scale with a...

    Warming up a tube amp

I beg to differ about the "before" part. It will only make no difference safety wise if the tube amp's volume knob is set to the minimum at initial startup. Can you imagine what will happen if you do a cold start on a tube amp with an input signal already present at maximum volume? The caps...

    Warming up a tube amp

During warm up, no signals should be run through it. I always use the pre-jogging muscle warmup analogy for vacuum tube equipment. Before commencement of the actual jog, one has to do muscle stretching exercises. The stretching exercises are equivalent to just simply turning on your tube...

The Decware TABOO MK 111 Thread

Dear WNBC, funch and AiDee On my CSP2+ and CSP3, I confirm that I can use all manner of tubes in the 6DJ8 family without any hum. I have tube rolled without any mishaps, even with rectifiers. The logical conclusion I can draw from this is that maybe there is one particular amp builder in...

The Decware TABOO MK 111 Thread

For all cases of hum, it is best to contact Steve Deckert (Decware) directly.   The situation might not be identical.   The unit in question was a CSP3 rather than a Taboo.   The affected owner contacted me privately for advice on his hum issue. He then updated me on the repair...

The Official Beyerdynamic T1 Impressions and Discussion Thread

I don't have the HD880 but I can comment on both the T1 and DT880 because I own both of those Beyers. The extra $ is worth it. The DT880 is very clear sounding but you never notice the sonic veil until you compare it against the T1. The T1 seems to convey music slightly more effortlessly or...

    Schiit Lyr Tube Rollers

If money is not a problem, then a pair of Amperex Pinched Waist 6922s is the best. The normal market price is US$600 per matched pair. What is unusual in this hobby is that they still show up regularly on Ebay. They can also be bought from Brent Jesse Audio. It only loses out to the Lorenz...

    Schiit Lyr Tube Rollers

The Amperex tubes (yes even the famed pinch waists) have one weakness. Compared with other tubes, their soundstage is slightly smaller though I wouldn't label them as constrictive. Lorenz Stuttgart PCC88s have one of the best , if not the best, soundstage. After replacing my Lorenz PCC88s...

Dubstep Girl's Massive 5AR4/5R4/5U4G Rectifier Review/Comparison! (Rectifer Tube Rolling thread)

The following Vacuum tube FAQ is useful for beginners. http://www.vacuumtubes.net/faq.htm From my experience, all 3 have an effect. If you are on a tight budget, than it is suggested to change tubes in the following order 1. Preamp tubes ( also advocated by Kevin Deal ) 2. Rectifiers 3...

    Schiit Lyr Tube Rollers

Hi, yes those are real Telefunken tubes because they have a diamond <> bottom as per the Ebay pictures. ITT Lorenz tubes do not sound as good as the real Lorenz Stuttgart tubes. Some ITT Lorenz tubes were actually made by Blackburn Mullard with the "B" factory codes so they are warm sounding...

I don't own the alo amp so I can't comment further on that combo. Do you enjoy what you are hearing at the moment? In other words, are you subconsciously toe tapping to music, especially your favourite tunes? This is the litmus test I use for all my audio equipment. Other audio attributes...
