    Quality EQ apps for ipod/iphone/ipad

You may not need an app. the equalisation on older ipods was truly dreadull; distortion even at just a few dB's of extra bass. But newer devices have decent equalisation. Some equalisers do introduce aliasing, however. The rockbox equaliser did this, for example with very high frequency sound...

So what the heck do protable amps do?

A protable amp is one that one prots with. However, few outside of the League of Extraordinary Protters even know what protting is, let alone the dictionary. My advice to you, my friend, is to avoid the issue of protting entirely, as you may open a Protora's Box, or a can of prots (depending...

So what the heck do protable amps do?

Some amps introduce their own colouration to the music which some people prefer. Sometimes the colouring amp can compensate for deficiencies in a low-quality source or idiosyncratic headphones. (Note that people tend to divide in to two camps: loud listeners and quiet listeners. Loud listeners...

    Brief Odac impressions

Well....that depends. From my experience (subjective), the onboard audio can be impossible for me to distinguish from my ODAC/O2 combo. My suspicion, which I've mentioned elsewhere, is that the mature cheapo soundcards, that are not doing anything special, have been producing hifi for a few...

    O2 AMP + ODAC

No because while there are >$500 amps that have either more power (which one or two bizzare headphones benefit by) or even lower noise/distortion performance, the latter is effectively irrelevant because the O2/ODAC performance in those terms is already at inaudible levels and will make no...

Well, yes, but I think that goes under the "all things being equal" clause.

    O2 AMP + ODAC

That's nice, but later it'll be back to "fantastic for the price" or "very very good" etc etc influencing our weaker brethren or casual visitor to pay more for something they think will be better still (the implication of those words). I would like to be friends, but the problem is that it's...

    O2 AMP + ODAC

Guffaw!! :D I don't think so. If the O2 claims are true then logically it proves that above $300 is a waste for everyone.

    O2 AMP + ODAC

The O2 is claimed to do this perfectly...within the parameters of what is humanly audible. Distortions and noise etc are below audible levels. So it really doesn't do it 'really really well' if the O2 is working as claimed. Nor is it 'good for the price', a previous adydula tricksey statement...

    O2 AMP + ODAC

That doesn't make much sense. I use my O2 as a desktop amp also. Clipping the 2.5x would have given me unity gain for my ultra-sensitives and left me the option of playing from my mp3 player or HD650s (serious desktop headphones). I've never seen a justification for clipping that 6.5x that...

    O2 AMP + ODAC

Unity gain gets people past 9 o'clock on the volume control/pot, which is desirable since just before 9 o'clock the volume control has channel imbalance. Other than that there shouldn't be any audible improvement since even with 6.5x gain distortion etc is under audible levels. It's popular to...

    ODAC+O2 or Dacport LX+E11/cMoy for HE-400?

As far as problem with the ODAC are concerned, it may not be the ODAC per se. For example, faulty devices may exist; it's not unlikely. Most electronics have a 5% approx failure rate. Also, the ODAC has some demands on how it is used... With the O2 it should be on low gain, (max 3.5x). High...

In 2012, how "bad" are default laptop sound cards?

Ok, so it turns out the Acer had a RealTek EQ app switched on. This little driver app seems to mash the audio quite badly compared to the microsoft driver "bass protection setting". With that switched off the Realtek sounds fine. I'm not sure about whether it sounds 'indistinguishable' since...

    O2 AMP + ODAC

Yes, sir! In anycase, it's the only measurement that explains the significant difference in stereo that I'm hearing. I'm not saying that the clip+ has little stereo, so while -65db versus -50db difference may not be big, it may still explain the audible loss of stereo I'm experiencing.

In 2012, how "bad" are default laptop sound cards?

Further to my comment that i couldn't tell the difference between my ODAC and Realtek and Sigmatel sound cards (whose output impedance I measured as surprisingly low), I've just come across a recent Acer laptop, the consumer Acer Aspire 5732Z, Realtek sound, with an output impedance of a...

    O2 AMP + ODAC

Quoting the others' I found that my Vista computer automatically set the ODAC as 16bit?!?! I didn't discover this for a while. I've also understood that the Vista/win7+ audio engine processes everything internally at 32bit, so even 16 bit may not be affected for volume control purposes...

    O2 AMP + ODAC

Make sure to play a 60Hz sound file as multmeters don't work well with anything other than that (according to the O2 designer on how to test for output impedance). I believe there is some gadget for doing blind testing using two devices and the same headphone. Maybe someone can tell us more.

    O2 AMP + ODAC

I noticed a significant difference between my clip+ and O2/ODAC soundstage: the clip+ almost as if it had crossfeed in comparison. I was really quite surprised. The difference in the measurements was 65db crosstalk vs 50db. That 15db is audible to me. Certianly, if I were buying a new DAC or...

    Player for Etymotic Research HF5

The E07K is a solid machine but you may not need it. Since the HF5 hasn't a microphone I assume you have less need of the convenience of switching from music to phone and back easily and so would be open using a clip+ or other non-phone player. (and, keeping in mind that etymotics don't really...

    Player for Etymotic Research HF5

I forgot to mention another handy tip: lowering the volume can reduce audio quality unless your onboard audio or external card/DAC is set to 24bit mode. When I plugged in my ODAC it defaulted to 16bit on my Vista system. (I also discovered a driver setting that allowed me to increase bass...

    Player for Etymotic Research HF5

Before I begin: a particular feature of players that significantly effects etymotics is output impedance. This significantly restricts your choices. I mention it quite a lot. They are also super-sensitive and so much more likely to hiss with poorer kit. I find hiss significantly detracts from a...

    O2 AMP + ODAC

I think we have to keep in mind that it isn't a commercial design, but rather aimed at the diyaudio crowd who are electronics people. In any case, all that anyone needs to know is that one should use low gain to avoid clipping issues unless the volume doesn't go high enough. In neither case...

    O2 AMP + ODAC

The ODAC's lineout is too high for the high gain setting (which is really for low-voltage sources such as ipods) and will clip, which is probably what you're hearing.the ODACi s pumping out plenty of voltage, so you shouldn't need the O2 on anything more than 2.5x unless you bypass the ODAC to...
