Are they active or passive speakers? Active means that they have an amplifier built in. If they don't, you probably have to connect an amplifier between your soundcard and the speakers, as most soundcards are only DACs.

DAC is an abbreviation for 'digital to analog converter'. It does what it says: converts the digital signal from a digital file or from CD/DVD into an analog signal, which is used or needed by a headphone or speaker or an amplifier.  

I don't know where you live but there should be electronics shops where they will solder it to a new jack for you.
