I've also got an He400, and bought the HP50 a week ago. One thing I definitely notice is the difference in space between the two.  To me, the he400 can sound like good speakers about 2-3 feet away from my head, while the Hp50 sounds more like 1-2 feet away.  It's a bit more intimate, but not...

The main problem with the cables is that little twisty metal thing can get jammed (no longer twists, so you can't screw it on or off easily anymore), and I haven't been able to fix it. I ended up getting a new cable under warranty.

Just an update: Head-direct is covering the damaged wires under their warranty and sending me new wires. Yay for good customer service!

Despite taking fairly good care of my HE-400's, the wire near the right ear plug has fatigued and split the rubber. I plan to fix it temporarily fix it using electrical tape, do you guys think that should be enough? I'd really like to avoid spending another $70-100 on a new wire if I can help...

Could you clarify? What kind of amp (Ie price point ) are you considering a "good amp"? How does a better amp make the HD650 sound better? Saying that one headphone beats another with a good amp really doesn't tell anyone much.
