Braiding is mostly for aesthetics and to remove mechanical noise from the wires bumping into each other. If you're going for the best bang for the buck, just get mogami or canare starquad which costs about a dollar per foot. Though I don't really like to use those cables for headphones since...

Your problem sounds like you mixed up the ground and the lead for one of the channels.

  It's 4 conductors on the center and 4 on the ground so it's 8 strands per interconnect. Soldering 4 20awg conductors onto connectors is absolutely brutal.

the terminal connects to the driver coils. If it comes off it's pretty much unrepairable. But do check with grado if they will fix it.  

i have the little dot MKIV with M8161 tubes. It's quite an amazing pair. If you want to consider tubes you can check out darkvoice 336se (hear pretty good synergy there) or something diy like a bottlehead crack. the schitt valhalla is good too. but there are tons of options and even more threads...

just wait till you spend a bit more on a tube amp or a very good solid state. Then the hd650's become a magical pair of headphones.    I'm addicted to mine. Can't go through a single day without listening to it.

The composition of the elements in the atmosphere might have a change on the sound. I ain't no scientist so i'm can't say for certainty.

Get the superlux next. It's one of my favorite headphones. Beautiful highs and crisp details. Just need to dampen it a bit to tame the loose bass and you got yourself something wonderful. Quote:

I have the hd650's with the LD MKIV and i have to agree with the above post. at lower volumes they are a bit lifeless, but at higher levels they become AWESOME. The problem with the 650's is that they need a tube amp to sound their best and i can't imagine the ibasso will do them any justice...

IMO i wouldn't get either for portable use. they're both pretty bulky headphones and you'll be hard pressed to get the best sound out of them with a portable setup. I would invest more into a easier to drive and more forgiving headphone like the hd-25 ii or the DT1350.   just my 2 cents.

hmm when i got it i was able to win a bid for 3 of them for around 10 bucks or so, however from the looks of it there arn't any deals right now. you might have to wait a bit for them then i guess. 

XD the foam mod essencially turns your hd555's to hd595's. you've missed out on alot of potential for those phones. 

Cool my EF91's came as well as 1955 raytheon ef95s   so far initial impressions of of the raytheon's is that it sounds very similar to the m8100's but it has heavier bass and more recessed mids. The instrument seperation isn't nearly as good as the mullards (i've been spoiled by it) however...
