+1 for Beyerdynamic DT 990. The 880 is also a great choice, not as treble and bass driven, they are really great all arounder headphones, and are basically a mini T1. Highly recommended.

I cannot fathom how a set of earpads can make a headphone sound bad, but I guess I'll experience it first hand when my replacements come in.

I own the schiit valhalla. Works the T1 well. If you can spend 1100 dollars, get a Woo Audio WA2, as the synergy between the T1 and WA2 are apparently amazing.   That's my next upgrade.

I would recommend the Beyerdynamic DT880. They are great all around headphones, are more neutral than their brothers, have great sound staging, wonderful imaging and detail, and not to mention they are really comfortable.
