Detailed Closed Cans under (around) $300

I'd say the thread name screams Mad Dog. IME, their detail is at least on par with D5000. Super non-fatiguing sound. Love them myself. I have the older Shure pads.

"Mad Dog" by MrSpeakers, modified Fostex T50RP review

Man, has this thread grown. Happy to see the MD and Dan get the attention they deserve. I had (still have, just not used very much) the D5000 and getting the MD cured my upgradeitis. I think that speaks for the quality of these headphones. There are plenty of impressions with most of which I...

Help me pick an optimal $600 Set-up

I'd like to throw in one suggestion more: a modified pair of Fostex T50RP (either DIY or a ready-made pair, I have Mad Dog and very happy with them) and O2 + ODAC (or the future ODA if you're fine with waiting for a while).   My Mad Dogs sound great with any genre I throw at them and I know...

Quote:     Seeing as no one else has answered (unless in a PM). Not sure about these since I'm no hardcore senior audiophile.   Can drive to good levels but no overhead = No ear-splitting levels (amp barely powerful enough)   SE = single-ended (as opposed to balanced, you can...

"Mad Dog" by MrSpeakers, modified Fostex T50RP review

There's always the possibility of eq'ing a small bump to whatever region you find lacking (if with oomph you refer to quantity/prominence). Haven't felt the need to play with any eq myself yet but I might actually try that just to get a feel of the whole business.

"Mad Dog" by MrSpeakers, modified Fostex T50RP review

I don't know about overhype but the only other set of very good (on my scale) headphones I've had the chance to compare the MD to are the D5000 and I honestly prefer the MD. I can't talk about specifics really, since I haven't rigorously A/B'd them or anything, but the whole non-fatiguing nature...

    Best Sounding DAC for HD800

You could add the Violectric V800 to your list of DACs to check out. Haven't heard any DACs from these price ranges myself but I've heard nothing but praise for the Violectric. It might well be on my shopping list once I, well, can afford it.

    Brief Odac impressions

Received my ODAC today. Install was plug'n'play, real breeze. Running through WASAPI on Foobar -> M-Stage -> Mad Dog. Compared to my previous dac, uDac2, I have noticed greater instrument separation and detail (the illusion of greater instrument separation probably has to do with the better...

Can't wait to hear people's impressions from the meet, with the new pads and all. Funny how Dog Pads are one letter away from Dog Paws. Maybe someone will make a further mod and call them that.   ...I'll see myself off.

Quote:   I might have given slightly the wrong impression. It's not that I can't enjoy hip hop or such music anymore (that's what I still always listen to on the go), but rather have found other genres to be able to produce so much more... of these subtle nuances, and indication of the...

"Mad Dog" by MrSpeakers, modified Fostex T50RP review

Quote:   Back before I got my D5000's I listened to a lot of underground hip hop and metal. Some brostep every now and then.   D5000 changed my preferences by a bit, wanting to hear what the headphones are capable of and all that, but the MD's have had an even bigger impact. I can't...

    Best Valued Headphones Thread

I bought my D5000's for about 400 euros; was a struggle to find them at that price. That said, my Mad Dog cost me about half of that and I find myself preferring them over the D5000's for a lot of things.

    Quick Advice About These Headphones

DAC is a digital to analog converter. Digital file/source -> DAC to convert digital signal to analog -> amp to amplify the analog signal to usable levels -> headphones.   For $1k, you're better off getting something like a modded T50RP (also planar magnetic; I've had good experience with my...

    Brief Odac impressions

Ordered my ODAC from Head'n'Hifi's Walter the day before yesterday and made the payment yesterday. Upgrading from a uDac2, curious about the magnitude of the difference it will make. Amping my Mad Dogs/D5000's with an M-Stage so the rest of the chain is fine for now.

    Non-audiophile reactions to high-end headphones

I let my friends listen to my D5000's when they were over. One of them said they were too bassy. Turns out he knows some guy who owns HD800's and has done some listening with his pair.   My father said the Mad Dogs sounded remarkably lifelike when listening to Stern and Zukerman play Bach.

Quote:   Yeah that goes with what people are saying about them. Must say I am becoming curious but no, I really don't think I'll be spending that kind of money on just a different 'version.' Especially with my budget.       Yeah that'd make more sense for sure. There will...

Quote:   "Mr. Speakers sent one of his Mad Dog modified Fostex T50RP headphones in for a measure and a listen. While certainly better than most modded T50RPs, they sounded a tad dry relative to the lush smoothness of LFF's Paradox or the Smeggy Thunderpants." - Tyll  ...

Quote:   M-Stage here. No experience of higher end amps but I'm also more of an objectivist, so if I do upgrade at some point, it'll probably be to Violectric something or the other. That said, M-Stage drives the MD's fine at 0 gain (12 o'clock for me). Contemplating changing the gain to...

Map Your Setup! (It's Time To Get Charty) Thread

I like the idea. Kind of only posting in order to remember to post a chart of my own later on, don't have the time to make one now.   If this thread turns out well, it should be very nice for new users to look through to learn a bit about this and that.

Rank the Headphones that You Own.

Now that I have had some ear time with the MD's... No A/B'ing so far though, so just very general impressions.   1. MrSpeakers Mad Dogs - clearly faster than D5000's and either more linear sub bass extension or less forward mids makes the sound have a more solid base, so to say. Which I...

"Mad Dog" by MrSpeakers, modified Fostex T50RP review

Quote:   Yep. The current price of the Mad Dogs, in my opinion, is bordering on ridiculous. I haven't experienced many other cans of the price range but seeing as I prefer the Dogs to the D5000 (not the best value phone out there) with everything I've tried so far, I think it is somewhat...

How many of you have ONE pair of headphones??

    4. :V No, 5. Porta Pro for portable use, M50 for portable/random use, Siberia V2 for gaming (will upgrade to AD700 with a mic at some point probably), D5000 and Mad Dog for home listening. D5000 don't get much eartime nowadays anymore since I received Mad Dogs though.
