Headphones with "impressive clarity" that don't cost a fortune?

AKG 700 series if you can deal with open headphones or the 550 series if you need closed are both a great deal used and offer impressive clarity for the price.

Synthesizer freak demanded!!! Which are the best cans to plug to a synth?

The music shops around me growing up always had Yamaha Orthodynamic headphones or Sennheiser 414s plugged into the display gear. I imagine it had more to do with the times and availability but that's always what I associate with synth headphones.

DAC for my PC desktop (headphones and active monitor too)

Hmm, I still own an iDo and have had some other nuforce units in the past. I haven't experienced anything like that. Sounds more like an actual fault somewhere in the setup, maybe a defective unit. I also listen at modest levels, perhaps it clips badly under a substantial load and I've never...

Choosing hd 598, how bad is the sound leak?

If you're using them in public definitely get closed headphones. As much as I like seeing people with nice open Grado, AKG, Sennheiser headphones it aggravates me when they use them on the subway. The Logitecth UE 6000 ones pointed out earlier are nice, I picked up the AKG K550 myself (perhaps...

    AKG gaming cans.

I like the K701 and AKG headphones in general, I've owned K series headphones for 15 or so years now. You might try the K550/551 for gaming. The fidelity isn't as high as the 701 but they are easy to drive and surprisingly open sounding for closed headphones. The K550 model is also really...

The nuforce offerings are nice for a casual setup and quite affordable for the quality.

Insane Question! Using Headphones for watching movies?

AKG and Sennheiser both make wireless headphones with dedicated surround processors, I haven't used either. Personally I owned some closed Ultrasones that I only enjoyed watching movies and TV with. They handled dialogue and effects well but didn't like them for music. I also preferred my...

A Letter From Focal: A Lesson In Customer Service

I'm glad they sorted it out. I gave up on the Spirit Ones after a couple of defective units, the build is really quite plasticy and I never got to experience the sound of a working unit. I replaced them with a wonderful sounding pair of AKG K550s to listen to while on the go, a bit large...

    Digitizing vinyl

Just to reiterate the common talking points. 1. Clean your records 2. Make sure your cartridge and turntable setup perfectly 3. Use the best Analog to Digital Converter you can. Forget the sound card and get a studio rack ADC 4. Expect it to be a hassle I abandoned the whole pursuit at fewer...

    An idea for audiophile system

Back when I owned a pair of AKG K1000s I remember a member telling me about running a sub along with them. So while the idea seems a tad counter intuitive to me, someone else put their has done it. I think the main problem would be finding a suitably fast sub to pair with the Stax.

    K1000 Naked... is it safe?

It's not worth it. I used to wear a baseball cap to keep my hair out of the drivers. If it touched them it would make an annoying noise, but I find this with almost all headphones.

What are your thought on inifinity speakers?

I have a pair of early 80's RS-7s in need of refoaming (only the woofers). I wouldn't be looking for much over shipping if you are interested. Let me know it pains me to see kit go to waste.

    Best Carbon Fibre Record Brush

I'm trying to choose a replacement dry brush for pre listening dusting and would like to get a carbon fibre one. Any suggestions? I'm leaning toward the Hunt or Decca but Audioquest, Clearaudio and others all have similarly attractive offerings. Any help would be appreciated.

    Jolida 202A with AKG K1000

From what I've been hearing I think I'm going with the ASL AQ1003DT over the Jolida (I still think the Jolida still looks sharper). So any expirence with the AQ1003DT and the K-1000? Thanks

How long did you stay awake when you got your first amp?

It’s like any other addiction: just one more (album) won’t hurt. It really is terrible though the better my system gets the less I can concentrate on anything besides the music.

    Jolida 202A with AKG K1000

Has anyone had a chance to evaluate this combination? I'm looking to rework my system and would like to find a inexpensive int. tube amp that would do justice to both my speakers (89.5 dbl @ 8ohm) and the AKGs if I go that route. The RVK w/ impendencer is attractive as well anyone know what...

    MDLP portable with line out

Curses, I remember the R900 had a menu setting for lineout does having the remote plugged in disable lineout on this unit? Thanks otherwise I guess I'll be staying away from MDLP for a little longer than and fixing up my R-55.

    MDLP portable with line out

So I could retain the functionality of the remote while using a portable amp, without running a patch cable from the remote. I don't adjust volume that often but I do like having control while the MD player remains in my bag in a little poach.

    MDLP portable with line out

Thanks I was afraid that was the case. I guess if I get around to upgrading to an MDLP unit I'll buy an old remote and remove the portion that enters the headphone socket.

    MDLP portable with line out

Are there any MDLP players (would prefer a player only) or recorders that have a separate line out or at the very least a second Headphone jack like the Sony mz-r70. I just picked up those portable Stax and don't want to run a patch cable from the remote to the amp (I have enough reservation...

Help with replacing caps in a ND 7020

A friend of mine gave me an old NAD 7020 that he had lying around but it needs a little work. Actually it’s in pretty decent shape. The only problems I've been able to identify are the power switch needs to be replaced or really cleaned (as it takes some fiddling to get clean power going i.e...
