How do you tell when a headphone is producing a neutral sound?

Thanks for bringing that up Xnor, many people seem to mistake a flat frequency response with "every frequency sounding equally loud" which are not the same thing.

2012 Best DAC & AMP for Sennheiser HD650

Well let me throw my 2 cents in.  I just got the HD650's and paired them with the Leckerton Audio UHA-6S MKII.  I find it to be a very good match.  I use it pretty much just as you described your intended uses would be.  I do not know how hard it would be to get it outside of the US though.

Is it ok to use a DAC/Amplifier with 32ohm AKG K550's

Glad we could help.  It is never good to feed one amp into another no matter how good they are.  You can get a Fiio L7 dock cable for the E17 that will give you a line out signal.  This will pull the signal from the dac of the E17 and bypass the amp section.  You can feed this to  the headroom...

Is it ok to use a DAC/Amplifier with 32ohm AKG K550's

I do not understand why you are using two amps in series.  You should not need an amp necessarily to drive 32 ohm headphones but the K550's may benefit from one.  Try just using the E17, turn the volume on itunes up to 100% and control the volume with the E17.

Could a modded T50rp best an HD650 (or come close to an LCD-2)?

I have been modding a pair of 50rp's for a short time and have them at a pretty good level, they sound very good, but I did not have a reference good enough to make a fair comparison so I have just received a pair of HD 650's.  Just got the 650's yesterday so its too early to do a comparison.  I...

Just listened to some Fostex T50RPs today... WOW!

First of all the resistance of the headphone isn't the governing factor, the efficiency is.  Secondly, most modding of the 50rp involves increasing the internal damping of phone which will reduce the efficiency.

In the market for new IEM's, around $215~

The W2's should suit your needs well.  They are some of my favorite iem's.  The bass is very good in quality and has good strength, provides the right foundation for classical music.  The treble is smooth but it is all there.  The treble lacks the peaky nature which may sound like details but...

Has anyone else been locked out of the "Is 'High-End audio a scam?" thread?

I have just been over on that thread and I had no trouble.  I am logged in and went right to it.

KRK KNS-6400 Review - Impressive $99 Giant Killer

This is not unusual to see as California has very strict rules on labeling of cancer causing chemicals.  Without knowing what the chemical is and how it is incorporated in the product it is hard to say.  My suggestion is not to eat them.

I am so disappointed!!  Unboxing videos get me so excited.

Anyone work at Best Buy (Magnolia section) or been to this area lately and listened to the cans?

I listened to several phones at a Magnolia hp display last week.  While most hp's sounded as I would expect, the K550's did sound way too bright or shrill.  This could have been the fit/seal I had or just the hp itself as many have commented that they sound bright.

Dilemma: Should I not believe any reviewers who talk about cables or just ignore that section of their review?

@bigshot:  Love those early Sheffield Labs records, I have several and also have several of the matching CD's.  Both are good but it is more about the quality of the recordings than the vinyl/CD thing.

    Sennheiser HD700 Review

Purrin and LFF:  Nice write-up.  It is good to have the things we see in FR plots and CSD's so well related to what we hear.  I is also nice to see the comparison with other phones.  I look forward to your getting the HE 400's and hearing your thoughts.

Dilemma: Should I not believe any reviewers who talk about cables or just ignore that section of their review?

@jnjn   Thanks, what you say in true about all approximations, they should only be used if you keep their limitations in mind.  I am still digging on the T-line thing.

Dilemma: Should I not believe any reviewers who talk about cables or just ignore that section of their review?

@jnjn   Thanks, again you make me think.  In the post, he does state he is using a simplified equation.  While not  giving the "whole" picture, do you not agree that for cables used in for audio frequencies, that it gives usable information?  As for T-lines, I will dig a little deeper.

Dilemma: Should I not believe any reviewers who talk about cables or just ignore that section of their review?

Quote: Correct, I did not mean to imply that the difference would be any more than noticeable if that, certainly not enough to justify the expense.

Dilemma: Should I not believe any reviewers who talk about cables or just ignore that section of their review?

@jnjn   Yes, L, R, C are the important factors in a speaker or headphone cable and as long they are kept within reasonable limits the cable should work fine.  It is possible to make a cable which sounds different if you screw things up enough, you have to try hard though.  A good link on...

Dilemma: Should I not believe any reviewers who talk about cables or just ignore that section of their review?

@jnjn   You make a good point and make it well.  Thanks for making me think.  You rightly point out that it is in the realm of  possibility for speaker cables to sound different.

Earsonics SM3 Appreciation Thread - Third Time is a Charm?

Just a note on the damper used in the SM3.  They are the Knowles acoustic dampers not the Etymotic filters but an Etymotic filter removal tool will work to remove the filters (dampers).  Try Mouser, Digikey, or Microsonics-inc. or google them.  The Knowles dampers are common items used in the...

Recommend me Neutral IEMs under 130 $

The HF3 and the HF5 are the same earphone with the HF3 having a mic and push to talk function to be use with iphones while the HF5 does not.  The HF5 is tuned to sound close to the 4s but is easy to drive from an ipod, they will play very loud using the ipod.  As far as the triple flange tips, I...

X2 on the HF5.  Very good detail, neutral and do not sound bass lite as some people say.
