dynahi power supply!
not wanting to be critical - surely the 5v reference could be replaced with a 10v reference (and the gain halved), such as TI's REF102 - the reference has approx half the noise too. Anybody want to try it?- 13405

any reccomendations for a fairly compact, low power amp?
Also, if you are worried about the peak to peak noise value of 75mV - I have seen ones with much lower than this. However with a little effort this can be almost eliminated. Use an ultra low noise voltage reference, then create a dual tracking op-amp based supply circuit from this. With...- 13405

any reccomendations for a fairly compact, low power amp?
You could, although a little expensive use a DC to DC converter something like this: http://uk.farnell.com/jsp/endecaSear...U=253340&N=401 that one will give out +/- 15V from a 5V input @ up to 3W. costs about £16/$30 but im sure you could find them cheaper in the states/elsewhere. They...- 13405

Interconnect Termination
Quote: A square wave contains extremely high frequency components and proper electrical termination is critical to the propagation of those high frequency components. In the context that you take a square wave and apply fourier analysis to it? Surely square waves do occur in some...- 13405

Value of resistor on a fan to quiet it down?
Firstly, you must ensure that whatever you do, it will be keeping the piece of equipment within the thermal guidelines. The best solution would be to buy a quieter fan, possibly one with fluid bearings. If you read up on silent computing there is a great resource of information on these. try...- 13405

Cutting Volume
If you care about the sound, I would not do anything other than replacing the pot. 1/ It is relatively easy to replace the pot anyway, neither is it expensive. The one used in the RA-1 is a cheapy. 2/ By attenuating the input or output, you are just adding another stage in the system. This...- 13405

Balanced vs. Digital
If you really want to use 98, I cant see any major problems cropping up. (As long as its Second Edition). You could use 98lite (google it), which would give you a SUPER minimal set which is what your looking for. Although they support PCI, its in its own funny package. So the easiest route to...- 13405

help me understand power conservation
Quote: does using a lower volume on the pot increase battery life? Yes, as tangent stated correctly above, unless of course its an amp which is biased into Class A - I'm unaware of any 'portable' amps which are like this though.- 13405

Balanced vs. Digital
A 486 based machine would suffice, but I beleive under most environments now and have the ability to play 320kbps mp3's / other formats (ogg, FLAC etc) I would recommend nothing less than around 133 mhz pentium based system. The reason being also that their is very little price difference...- 13405

Balanced vs. Digital
You can be 100% sure you are taking the right route by going digital. However - when it comes to each node, it is a very unelegant and overly complex solution by using a full blown pc. I do myself own a fanless P4 based mini-itx system, but can you imagine ever having to boot them up? you...- 13405
