Millett "Starving Student" hybrid amp
It works now! It turns out the problem was, embarrassingly, a broken wire to the output (I think...) that I did not see because of the angle and enclosure. It sounds pretty good, low distortion not much coloration. I was originally using old RCA or another American made clear top 12AU7A that...- Ares

Millett "Starving Student" hybrid amp
I have just finished building this amplifier, it is the second SSH I have built. The version I built is the 12AU7 modification. It sounds great! Well the left channel does. I haven't had the chance to listen to the right channel yet, but I am working on it. Both tubes light up and both MOSFETs...- Ares

grado & gaming?
I have only tried the lowest grado models - I doubt if my conclusion can be extrapolated to the rest of the family, these are awful for gaming. The SR-60s were very fun and placed you right in the game; however, when you take it into the multiplayer circuit it is difficult to position and it...- Ares

Nikon Film SLR suggestions
I will be the voice of dissent and recommend the venerable Minolta SRT-101. It is a all manual camera that functions without a battery sans light meter functionality - with the addition of a $1.25 hearing aid battery the light meter happily bounces up and down. It is solid and cheap - demanding...- Ares

Yamaha M35
All of the other amplifers there were overpriced but this one was $2 because the people at the church sale had plugged it in and saw a red light - they assumed that the red light was some kind of warning light. Yeah for unconventional power LEDs. -
Yamaha M35
I have it switched to 2 channel but I doubt i am getting 80 watts. Full volume on the Yamaha is equal to about 11 o'clock on the Denon with the same speakers - yet it does sound much less boomy and clearer. I am also wondering how I would go about bridging the Yamaha and if it is worth it... -
Yamaha M35
I just purchased this amp. Considering the tag price was much less than the cost of gas to get it home (and it was only a 10 minute drive) it was a complete impulse buy. It looks like it is from the early 90s or later 80s and appears to be a basic power amp. It has 4 channels but i am running it...- Ares

I almost died tonight
My two cents: America needs more roundabouts- many drivers do not know how to correctly handle four way stops. While most drivers do not know to yield to the driver on the right the ones who do almost always wait for visual confirmation for fear that the other driver does not follow the...- Ares

Millett "Starving Student" hybrid amp
Thank you very much. Is it possible that one tube may have glowed extremely hot if the interconnect between the two tubes is loose. Most notably, the wire between R13-R1 and C6? When forcing the MOSFETS up, I placed unnecessary strain on this wire. I think that is what was causing all that...- Ares

Millett "Starving Student" hybrid amp
I first would like to thank the forum for the wealth of information that allowed me to build this beautiful piece of hardware. However, I have a few questions. While my wiring is messy and my parts are budget, (carbon resistors, 610s instead of 510s, generic 180uF capacitors, 24AWG copper...- Ares

White Powdery Substance - RCA Interconnects
RCA connectors are normally gilded. There is a plate of metal that surrounds a hard plastic. While I do not have any good RCA connectors, the radioshack one that broke in my receiver the other day was built in this manner. -

Budget IEMs that I won't break
While I think the Denons sound fairly accurate; I find them hard to use when there are other noises around, and i can only enjoy them in seclusion from other noises. Something to keep in mind.- Ares

Zune vs Sansa Clip?
I did a totally unofficial test with my garbage equipment and I thought the Sansa Clip sounded better than the zune; however, I cannot comment on the iPod. the clip sounded more full and less EQed at the high-midrange area than the zune. Nevertheless, the differences were almost negligible and...- Ares

Headphones for a Programmer
As someone with similar music tastes and a great appreciation for object orientated programing, i recommend a used pair of DT770 2005. Vista Service Pack 2 better sound quality?
I doubt SP2 improved sound quality, but it is possible. The upgrade was actually very minor, and very few features were added. The list can be found here: Notable Changes in Windows Server 2008 SP2 and Windows Vista SP2 However, it did change the driver model to make Vista play nicer with...- Ares

Unamped Zune headphone advice
While the K240s do work with the unamped zunes, the sound really opens up when it is amped. While unamped it is a bit veiled, amped the bass is more controlled and it appears to be more separated. I have never heard these, but if you can find Audio Technica's M50, people have said that they...- Ares

Happy with my K240MP
I hope this is not redundant, but I would like to note the benefits of the AKG vinyl pads. The DT 770 pads completely destroy the midrange that makes the Sextetts special.- Ares
