Vintage/Current R2R DAC Owners Discussion, Insight, and Review Thread

"unbelievably digital files played back through JRIVER are sounding better than my vinyl rig" This comes as no surprise to me. I've been running R2R DACs for years. Vinyl only wins if the mastering is significantly better than CD mastering. (rarely but can happen) yes, DSD uses lots of HDD...

Vintage/Current R2R DAC Owners Discussion, Insight, and Review Thread

If you are really serious about buying genuine K grade chips, email burr brown and ask them if they know any reputable suppliers that still have stock of this discontinued part. Or ask the supplier to show you the invoice from burr brown proving it's genuine. Then email burr brown and ask if...

Hard to say. The burr brown data sheet says the K grade chips have a white dot on them, not a giant "K" But, someone else might know something different? When they are selling at that price it's a good incentive to fake the "K". It's probably a working PCM1704 normal grade though. Why do you...

Vintage/Current R2R DAC Owners Discussion, Insight, and Review Thread

Based on my experience, I agree with your statement above. Based on your second comment, which is based on empirical observation, perhaps 16bit 44.1khz really is "good enough"? My only complaint with music that I like which I think sounds "not great" from an audiophile point of view, is...

Vintage/Current R2R DAC Owners Discussion, Insight, and Review Thread

I take your point regarding signal to noise, but we are talking about bit depth, and I have seen measurments of commercial 16 bit DACs which have shown them to only have a bit depth of 14-15 bits of resolution. The least 1-2 significant bits can get swamped with noise, and I have found this to...

I think you are mistaken. All TDA1543 chips use a digital reciver chip or a USB to i2s reciver chip. They do not have onboard SPDIF decoding. This is an interesting topic. You have to take into consideration the frequencies of the background noise. If background noise is pink or white noise...

Vintage/Current R2R DAC Owners Discussion, Insight, and Review Thread

Can you please explain why you think its nonsense when using a single ended DAC? Its do-able, and has been done but its not really "basic" to make a differential DAC using R2R chips. It involves some "glue" logic, meaning more chips, longer track lengths, latency between channel data etc. If...

"what rubbish is this" not rubbish. Nos Dacs have many technical faults. But sound good to me. So what?   I almost exclusively use r2r nos dacs. Why are you arguing with the converted? delta sigma = cheap nasty ****. Yes I know! I've been saying it for years!   but this doesn't mean I have...

The fact that NOS dacs don't have a flat response should not be debated. Its a fact.the only way around it is designing an output stage with a shelf filter to keep the very highs equal to other frequencies. Still doesn't avoid the issue of aliasing! Buy you can avoid both issues by playing them...

Vintage/Current R2R DAC Owners Discussion, Insight, and Review Thread

I am sorry I was discussing the dac60 with pcm1704. The design is rather irrelevant if it sounds great which it does. Great design and poor subjective sound isn't what I'm after. No I don't particularly like delta sigma sound. However I don't mind the intermediate hybrid r2r chips like...

I couldn't care less what John Darko says. I've heard many dacs he reviews and find his opinion constantly conflicts with my experience with the same product. Also remember that he gets paid for his reviews so he always has something positive to say. Its not prudent to bite the hand that feeds...

Lite DAC 83 is a quite flat and boring sounding DAC. Detailed yes. But very flat and boring. Not vibrant. Not forward. Not recommended. However the lite DAC 68 with pcm1704 and tube output sounds excellent.

MQn minimalist Wasapi WAV C++ memory player integrated with foobar2000

I had a very quick listen to MQn last night.   I have done no optimisations, and so far I am very impressed with the sound. I usually use CMP cPlay,  but straight away this software seems to have less colouration, and a more relaxed (noise free) midrange.   More comments to follow.   Keep...

    Teradak Teralink-X2 released 19.1.10

Its a fair comment about the lack of exact specifications regarding the Teralink PSU.  however I just checked one ad on ebay here:  http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Teralink-X2-X1-U9VA-Linear-Low-noise-Power-Supply-/260959402579?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3cc2647a53#ht_2234wt_968   It...

    Teradak Teralink-X2 released 19.1.10

FWIW, TeraDac answered my emails promptly. Anyway I bought mine from Valab on ebay. Who incidentally are also good sellers, and reply to emails.   What sort of info would you want on the Teralink PSU that you could not find out on the ebay ads, or by looking at the internal pictures?
