Fastnbulbous,
Sennheiser definitely learned from the experience crafting the best sounding headphone in the world. We also appreciate your enthusiasm for sure! But the picture on facebook you posted was for the current HE-1, and is still publicly visible.

Sure, I was mostly kidding, but also pointing out how odd it is to show an image of the HE 1 when building up excitement about some mysterious new announcement.

My thought was that perhaps Sennheiser would indeed finally make use of what they learned from both the Orpheus and HE 1 and make a consumer level electrostatic with more accessible pricing. I do think it's good to reach for the stars for the personal audio version of the Bugatti Veyron, but it makes good economic sense to trickle down the technical achievements to other lines like Porsche, Audi and Volkswagen and serve a variety of consumers.

I'm not holding my breath, but am curious about what is coming.

All terrible car brands as they centre around the volkswagen group, the leading star in the dieselgate nox scandal.

With the same customer concern as united airlines placing profit above public health, Sennheiser should not be associated with such companies.
:)

In all seriousness, although Sennheiser would have gained electrical & acoustic Design & Implementation from building the Orpheus 2, R&D into how to make a cut-price version with comparable performance may mean re-inventing the wheel again. To be affordable, gone is the free-standing marble base, platinum & premium material trims for the headband & membranes, the 8x TOTL vacuum tubes + potentially the onboard separate amplifier etc. All these acoustic luxuries were selected & tested as part of the Premium Orpheus building process & might not be able to be substituted without creating a different model entirely.

Could a cut-price Apollo got man to the moon just as safely?

Cute. Actually our Sennheiser friend used the Bugatti example when I first received the email of the response, but was changed after.

Let's forget about the HE 1 for a second. Consider the range that Sennheiser offers, all the way down to very inexpensive headphones available at Target. Shouldn't they be able to make electrostatics that challenge Stax at their pricepoints? I'm sure there's not a lot of profit making those comparatively. Does this mean that beyond Stax the only companies to tackle electrostats are smaller operations like MrSpeakers?

Also, the HE 1 may not be so untouchable. At a recent electrostatic event that had all the major players there including the HE 1, Headphone.guru had this to say: “The combination of the MrSpeakers ETHER E Electrostatic Headphone, the HeadAmp Blue Hawaii Special Edition Electrostatic Headphone Amplifier and the Chord DAVE FPGA DAC ($15,500) were without question my favorite sound of the event.”

Any chance you could confirm the above pictures authenticity or any details on this "HD 820" headphone, or at least a teaser for it?

Sounds like the HD 820 is a closed version of the 800-S. I've heard it was to be previewed at the FUJIYA AVIC Tokyo Headphone Festival. Anyone heard anything?

Fastnbulbous,
I wanted to change my initial reply, because it wasn't in the tone that I wanted to express. Thank you for being lighthearted! I agree that while he HE-1 is "New" it's not an "upcoming release."

I honestly don't know if there is a new headphone coming yet as I'm new and it's not something I've been tasked to yet - that said, we DID show a production-ready model of the HDV 820, the DAC/Amp, at the FUJIYA AVIC Tokyo Headphone Festival. I have no secrets to share :)

Yet?

Well, something that's displayed as a new product for 2017 on an official Sennheiser screen or poster can barely be called a «secret». From what I got so far it seems to be a closed version of the HD 800(S), and above teaser has made many Head-Fiers curious. If you're not yet informed about it yourself, it should be easy for you to get the background info; you can still keep the «secret» parts secret, but please let us know as much as possible about the HD 820!
