Use the volume a little bit louder than you usually listen to.

pink noise is a good choice, you can also choose music which has more low frequency sounds, and turn bass to the max(before distorted).

according to my poor knowledge, changing computer is the best way to install rockbox correctly. I heard someone changed 5~6 computers to prevent errors in installation, finally he did it. Im sorry im not able to help you any further... :(
