V-Moda's headphones are built like tanks, and sound great. The M-100s get a little pricey, but their Crossfade LPs can be found for less than half the cost of the M-100s. 

I found a pair of these for $300, so I went ahead and bought them. Here are my impressions, from best to worst:   Sound quality is excellent. Really good isolation, very detailed and there's plenty of backbone to the bass.    They fit very well, but it's kind of a pain to do the around-ear...

Wow, that's definitely a range. I found some W4s for $300 used...might go that route! 

Definitely. I understand that, but I still wondered if there was some type of pre-EQ'd files, videos or interactive websites like Don just linked to that would show some of the differences in sound signatures.

How do the recording/mastering of songs play into this? Are there any artists or songs that are known to have certain sound signatures in their recordings?

The W4 and W40 are really stretching the budget. I have some amazon credit and the UE900s are on there for $370. The W40s are $500? Good lord. If they really are that much better I could sell some stuff or wait for sales/deals...
