h'phone to end all phones
Ety's do deserve IMHO to be on the short list of any highend headphone buyer. Maybe they should be on the short list of any highend components whatsoever. To argue for them a bit more, taoster, you've already got the Sennheiser experience with the 580's, and the 600's are said to be mostly a...- Wes

Etymotic ER 4's and comfort
dandrewk, I can confirm from my experience too all that has been said here. I, too, have used only the silicon plugs because I so quickly accomodated to them. After a year of using them a few hours a week, I'm still on the first set. At the start, they may make your ear fell just a bit...- Wes

hand washing
I'm skeptical about that "kinder, gentler" stuff, mbriant. It would take some research to prove one way or the other, of course. I would point out that the deliberate targeting of large numbers of civilian non-combatants and near universal conscription for war are characteristic of our times...- Wes

hand washing
Russ, I think you are overestimating the effect of modern medical methods. Although there have undeniably been benefits, the averagelife expectancy seriously exaggerates them. Life expectancy has indeed risen markedly, but that is because in earlier times it was brought very low by infant...- Wes

hand washing
What about the faucet handles? To you clad yourselves in paper towels to operate them too? Well, far more often than not, I do wash my hands but with the knowledge that this is mostly a ritual without any serious prophylactic purpose. Expected behavior, and I myself expect it of me. The...- Wes

ety filters?
Joe, I've had mine for almost a year with use every other day or so, and I've still not changed the filters. I did buy spares of everything as Vertigo_1 suggests, but so far I've used only the original silicon rubber tips and a couple of foam ones for guests. Nevertheless, I wouldn't want to be...- Wes

Gurdev Singh - The Art of the Indian Sarod
Sounds great to me too, Neruda! Thanks for the lead. I'll no doubt go for it as soon as I can. In an attempt to return the favor, let me recommend (if you don't know about him already) Ustad Bismillah Khan. He plays shenai, a sort of reed flute on which he developed an unusual proficiency. He... -
word of advice for people thinking of getting etys or sending them back
Agreed. I had, weirdly, discomfort in one ear only. In less than two weeks, it disappeared. Think about breaking in new shoes or, better still, getting used to shoes again after wearing open sandals all summer without a break.- Wes

Etys and microphonic effect - is it really THAT bad?
Don't overlook another fix that was suggested here. I haven't been able to try it myself because the necessary cans are not available to me. Those are the Ear Huggers. Apparently, they include an earpiece with an open channel into which the cable can be pressed. You buy them for a very few...- Wes

OMG! I just ordered a pair of Etymotic ER-4S!!!
Not to worry, Eagle_Driver. All will be well. You will have a hard time beating them expecially for your intended use.- Wes

Ety 4P and occasional crackling sound: need repair?
One other possibility: I notice that just after insertion, especially when my ears are a little most after a shower, that there are scratchy noises as they settle in. If I chew or wiggle my ears (Yes, I have that atavistic ability!) so that my ear canals change shape, those sounds will appear...- Wes

Top 10 Classical CDs of all time
Hmm. I was actually in the situation you descirbed, kelly. I had no music in my collection except one Zappa disc that was sitting in the disc player when my home was burglarized. No magic apart from insurance helped rebuild it. As I recall, I wanted: 1-3) Shostakovitch's 1st, 4th, and 11th... -
ER-4P Amplifier Challenged
I would second Nezer's opinion. I've got the 4s and a Corda amp used with a not notable, old JVC carousel CD player. I can compare to 4s's directly out of a Radio Shack pcdp with high--for these days--output. The point is that my sources are not exceptional in any way and probably qualify as...- Wes

which cd blanks?
Could be an artifact more of the operating position rather than of disc quality. When held vertically, the player mechanism will have a gravitational force pushing one way across the direction in which it needs to move by tiny, reliable increments. With standard CD's the pits may, with their...- Wes

Nougat: Musicality: HD600 vs. K501
I would say "musical" used to evaluate audio equipment means that the equipment allows you to enjoy the music presented with a minimum of distractions from the artifacts introduced (inevitably) by the reproduction of the music. It implies to me that there is little distortion so that everything...- Wes
