There is no adverse effects when everything works. But when something goes wrong and the amp starts looking for a ground it will most likely use the user (me) as the ground which is pretty dangerous. Seeing as the amp is sitting at my desk and I sometimes use it with headphones I rather not take...

Usually the receiver has a ground pin somewhere near the phono inputs. Connect the ground cable to that. If there isn't one you need to find something else that is grounded, your shelf probably isn't.

"Musical" when describing the sound of something.   I have no idea what that means. There are many other terms that also make no sense when describing a sound, but I think that is the one that baffles me the most and people use it all the time.
