    Grado Headband Alternatives/Replacements

It depends really. The plastic Grados aren't that heavy, so the headband was never a problem for me when I had my SR80i. Also with such a cheap headphone I wouldn't buy such an expensive headband. I would only recommend it if you see yourself going all the way with modding them with Magnum...

    Grado Headband Alternatives/Replacements

Turbulent Labs has a lot of nice products for a Grado build, including a very nice headband that looks close to stock, but is much more heavily padded. Since the JMoney headbands stopped being produced these have basically been the go-to for Grado modders. Here's a link to their Onyx Manta, but...

Headphones under $300-electronic and Hip Hop Oriented

Honestly not really. I've used it many times on my iPod 5.5G and don't need to put it past 3/4 volume, and when I use an amp or a CD player I never put the volume knob past about 9 o clock. I would recommend buying a desktop amp and DAC like the Schiit stack, the 02/ODAC, the HUD-MX2, or the...

Headphones under $300-electronic and Hip Hop Oriented

Since you're mainly looking at electronic and hip-hop I would say go with the V-Moda M-100. Those genres don't exactly need large soundstage so I wouldn't worry about them being closed, but if you do want a good open pair definitely check out the HiFiMAN HE-400 since they're on sale for $300...

Your immediate reaction to the May '13 Stereophile cover

Well to be fair their reviews of the Skullcandy and Beats seemed pretty accurate. Personally I've never found Beats to be fashionable in any way, but the Aviators in black look okay. I just don't see the need for these fashion headphones when companies like V-Moda and Sennheiser are making great...

M50 or the Beyerdynamic Custom One Pro?

The sound between the two isn't that different, but the COP has adjustable bass, so I'd go with that for electronic music. However if you wanted to save up a bit I'd say skip both of them and buy a V-Moda M-100. I much prefer it to either for electronic music, but it is quite a bit more expensive.

    Breaking in M50s?

What you're thinking of is referred to as burn-in, and you can go about this a few different ways. Some say to play pink noise through your cans, while others say to just simply play your music collection through them. From what I've found it really doesn't matter, just pick a method and burn...

Looking to switch from IEMs to cans

First off Grados aren't flat by any means. Their bass response it definitely underpowered and the highs are at the forefront, some even call them shrill. So while you don't have to worry about them being flat, they don't exactly fit your bill.   For $100 I can say the Audio Technica ATH-M50s...

Desktop Amp/DAC for MrSpeakers Mad Dog

Okay I'll look at vintage receivers, particularly Sansui since I love their look, but I still need to know if the Mad Dogs will work well on portable devices. If they can I could sell the M50s and put the money towards a better receiver.

Desktop Amp/DAC for MrSpeakers Mad Dog

So I bought a pair of ATH-M50's and let's just say I was less than impressed, so I decided to get a true upgrade. So I'm planning to buy Mad Dogs. They seem perfect, but I haven't found any info on what kind of amp to use with the cans.   I need to know if they can be run off of a portable...

    Is B&W P5 worth it?

Since you only care about sound quality they aren't quite worth it. When looking for sound quality you typically want to steer clear of "designer headphones". What I mean by this is headphones that are meant to be more of a fashion accessory. Think Beats by Dre, Skullcandy, etc. Now don't think...

Grado Sound in a Closed Can?

I currently own a pair of modded Grado SR80i's. I love the sound they produce, but I have a couple of problems with them. They leak a ton, and they're really uncomfortable. So I am looking for a pair of closed cans that will have a similar sound, but without the subdued bass of an unmodded...

    I'm in a headphone dilemma.

Quote: If they happen to have a pair of SR225i's or any other Grado with L-Cush pads I think you should really try them. I have never had a problem with comfort, but most seem to complain about it. I just really feel that those are perfect for you, so please if they have a pair give them a...

    Best bass under $200?

Probably the Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro. The bass is tight and powerful, but not muddy in the least bit. If you're willing to go the used route you can sometimes find the DT 990 Premium for about $250, which I would say is definitely worth the extra $50.

    I'm in a headphone dilemma.

Quote: Hey man Grados definitely aren't for everyone. It's totally understandable to not want to open up your new $200 headphones using steaming water.   But on the subject of these other cans, I think the HD598 are incredible. If comfort is what you're looking for these will deliver. I...
