how do you choose a suitable vintage amp?   i assume you just terminate the headphone connectors differently.. but surely you'd be at risk of damaging the headphones if the output went too high? which i imagine would be pretty easy to do?

  if you're looking for a high end solution - which would make sense if you have such a good amp - then i'd suggest using a PC as the source feeding into an external DAC (preferably with a decent USB SPDIF converter)   using a pc gives you heaps of options for an interface. e.g. XBMC, foobar...
