HD598, DT880Pro, SR225, ATH-M50?
oh and I will probably pick up a Fiio E11 at B&H since they have it and it's cheap ($60). B&H wants $150+ for the E17. I actually have a bunch of unpopulated headphone amp boards back home (OPA2134 thingies). Never got around to soldering those tiny SMD components. so probably the E11...- orlyandico

HD598, DT880Pro, SR225, ATH-M50?
I'm not in the market for used. All of these things are available in Singapore at inflated prices, but I will be in NYC in a few days and will visit the fabled B&H. They have the 598 for $250, the DT880 for $235 (yeah, cheaper than the 598). Of course the ATH-M50 is less ($170? same as HD558)...- orlyandico

HD598, DT880Pro, SR225, ATH-M50?
I'm thinking around the budget for these phones I've listed (e.g. 250 maximum). Closed would be preferable but my 495 is open back. I think the 598 is too? I like comfortable and I like Sennheiser. I'd just get the 598 except it's at the top end of my price range and there are...- orlyandico

HD598, DT880Pro, SR225, ATH-M50?
Want to replace my falling-apart HD495. Not using an amp right now and would rather not. Recommendations? have always drooled over the HD598..- orlyandico

I'm thinking of swiss-cheesing the casing of my HD201's
Because they have very thin bass and clamp easily! (and they were like $15). A few minutes with a dremel could turn the solid plastic back into a colander.. Is this worth the effort, or is the blu-tack mod more recommended? (I may just do it out of spite.. as that HD201 is the 2nd-worst...- orlyandico

Really cheap headphone amps
Alas those Indeeds are all in the $80 - $100 range now (quick ebay check). Anyway I bought a 12AU7-based tube preamp from arjenhelder. I'm planning to use it to drive my TriPath.. but can it be used as a headphone amp? (I also got five 12AU7 tubes cheap, so maybe I'll DIY a tube headphone...- orlyandico

The BEST full sized headphones for $30 USD or less (updated Nov. 27 2013)?
Oli, |joker| rates the Maxells quite highly but he rates the Beyerdynamic DT231 higher still. Do you agree with this assessment? when you say the Maxells were bested by Grados, which Grados? SR60 / 80 / 125? I almost bought the DT231's on the strength of |joker|'s review to replace...- orlyandico

Really cheap headphone amps
I'm going to try amping my decade-old HD495's but I'm cheap. Ten years ago, it was recommended to amp these cans to get best performance (they rated better than SR-60's when amped, but were bested by the Grado's un-amped). I've decided to go this route rather than get new cans because I'm going...- orlyandico

Replacements for HD495, under $150
Turns out the HD495 are quite different from the HD497. I guess I'll look for replacement pads and the headband padding instead..- orlyandico

Replacements for HD495, under $150
Irrelevant, but the 495s have this cloth sock-like thing with a plastic ring on it that snaps to the phones. I put the shaped dish-washing sponge inside of that sock-like thing, so they snap in like the OEM pads. Ghetto, yes, but it doesn't look too bad.. Still, I do have some dignity...- orlyandico

Replacements for HD495, under $150
After reading the very long review here.. http://www.head-fi.org/forum/thread/433318/shootout-47-portable-headphones-compared-maxell-dhp-ii-added-08-30 I'm pretty much decided to get the Beyerdynamic DT235's. They are a much cheaper class of phones, I will admit ($55) but at that price...- orlyandico

Replacements for HD495, under $150
I just checked at a store here in Singapore and the HD555 costs quite a lot vs US price - about $170. By comparison the M50 is $150 and the SR80i $128.- orlyandico

Replacements for HD495, under $150
Ah. Ok that's a good addition to my vocabulary. "Bright." I've heard earphones like that (my Audio-Technica low-end IEM's are like that, for example) and you're right, it can get fatiguing. So I don't like bright. :-) Funny thing is, in 2002 the HD495/497 was rated by Headwize as their...- orlyandico

Replacements for HD495, under $150
Hi 1Time, I mostly listen to stuff like Susan Enan, Sarah Mclachlan... (you probably get the picture). I'm not really educated about audio - I have put together a couple GainClones and am using a TriPath amp right now.. but that's more because I'm an electronics geek. I can tell the...- orlyandico

Replacements for HD495, under $150
hi 1Time, Thanks for the welcome. I did a bit more research and it seems the HD555 would be a good bet (HD595 drivers in cheaper case). The HD495 is pretty similar to the HD497 in fact I think they are the same, and the 555 is supposed to be loads better. My other question then...- orlyandico
