FWIW, I had 963sa and MSB Dac Link III, and before I sold the 963sa I never used its analog out for Red Book (MSB has a tad more air). I'm not sure how the tos sounds but in the worst case you get a second had MSB and get better Red Book than 963sa - Assuming you don't need SACD.

I've got a JB940 (QS series) and compared it with unmodded MSB DAC Link III and it's a touch less airy but better than the CD player from a mini-Hifi (Onkyo). Regarding damage to the recording head mine would work as a DAC without putting in an MD, so that's not an issue I suppose.

Anyone has the chance to compare the PSU-upgraded MSB with other DACs (e.g. MF A3.2 24, or Benchmark)? I felt uncomfortable paying the same amount for PS as the MSB, that's why I bought EMU 1212M, thinking it would cost much more to get better sound.

For equipment that I've owned 1. EMU 1212M (Best) 2. MSB DAC Link III (stock) 3. Sony MD MDS-JB940 4. Philips 963SA (stock) I'm not sure about the difference between 3/4 since I've sold 4 already. I've had the DAC Link III for about 3 years, so I think it should be out at least in 2000...
