Finally upgraded the stock powertube on mine today to a Mullard 6080. Though it's only been playing for a few hours so far (was NOS), there is a big difference in the highs - much more sparkle, not in a harsh way though. My experience with vinyl vs. cd
all these people complaining about getting up after 20 minutes to turn over LPs need to try listening to 7" singles - it's hardly worth sitting down at all!- jamesb

you could also check Audio MIDI Setup in /applications/utilities (if this is installed on your system, i think its part of the default install, but my memory is poor...) try changing bitrate, volume, check output is set to the right thing etc. failing that, i agree that sparks == hardware...- jamesb

i really appreciate your efforts to explain this stuff cheesebert. having spent several years (before quiting ) as a physics undergrad i am aware of the mess coaxial cable can make of a signal, having done experiments with oscilloscopes etc. of course this was with signals in the 1 MHz range...- jamesb
