I'm guessing some mechanism(s) to attach the two devices physically and electrically. Maybe something cheap or maybe something like a mini dock that the two devices connect to providing a physical and electrical connection making a nice clean stack. I think that would be nice.

Don't need an amp. You can use it like the E17, your choice to use LO or HO.

I think an important feature is a wireless remote control interface so the player can be easily used as a system component.  After testing the various DAPS I want to dedicate one to the home rig.  Kind of inconvenient though without though without a remote interface.

Seems like the easiest may to get the M8 and DX50 connected would be coaxial to spdif conversion. Lots of devices to do that, don't know how portable they can get, but it's going to be much easier and precise than coaxial to USB.

It would certainly have to be an option if it was provided. The last thing i'd want is the player the play anything else after i told it to play an album. There are other modes for multi album play.

Ideally just more volume, but technically the specifications for the Amplifier are different at different gain settings. Distortion is generally always increased, but you likely will never be able to tell.  Your headphones will add more distortion than the amp ever could.  Your ears will have to...

I expect the DX50 and it's price point, may have changed some decisions about the X5... or maybe not if they still want to get it out in 2013.

  What did you expect them to say?  If no specific phones or listening level were even mentioned ... and even if they were...  maybe you should ask another person at the company he might have a different opinion... yes this is silly and posting the question to iBasso was even more silly.

The protection circuit should click in after a short delay following power-up (and it sounds like it is doing that)... but there should be nothing to engage after one presses play... any noise at that point is software/decode related.
