The New DAC Super Pro DAC707 USB

Just spotted this neat USB version. Link;- http://www.audiomagus.com/component/...id=27&vmcchk=1 Cheers ......... Graham.

Speakers next to amp causing balance problem ?

Stereo loudspeaker leads should always be the same (inductance/resistance) length. LS are seldom identical, try swopping them round. Cheers ....... Graham.

    Lowering the noise floor?

Hi Mogul, Set your volume control to where you hear the hiss. Switch off your source. If the hiss disappears it was the source. If the hiss is still there, then it is the pre-amplifier stage of your amplifier. Cheers ....... Graham.

Benchmark DAC1 now available with USB

Thanks Elias, It occured to me after posting that if necessary a DIYer could make up their own small "wall-wart" powered housing beside a racked DAC-1 if they needed a remotely controllable ALPS+buffer facility. Cheers ........ Graham.

Benchmark DAC1 now available with USB

Hi Elias, Did Benchmark ever consider fitting an Alps motorised pot;- so that remote level control could be offered ? Could one be fitted by a competent technician ? Cheers ....... Graham.

HELP with Thorens 160 noise "Da..Da..Da"

Take off the belt and wash gently between your hands with detergent under the kitchen tap. "duwh..duwh..duwh.." = not enough side tension on motor pulley/bearing. Washing the belt fractionally tightens it, as well as preventing any slip or slow start-up.

[Review] Modded Zhaolu D1.3 vs Benchmark DAC1

White noise is dynamic, and thus could reveal differences between converter/amplifier stage capabilities, including relative phase shifts. White noise is not any good in isolation because the 'ear' quickly accepts white noise 'as it is', however with directly switched comparisons it becomes...

[Review] Modded Zhaolu D1.3 vs Benchmark DAC1

Just for interest. When making reproduction comparisons, does anyone ever use CD recorded white noise ? This can give an indication of dynamic capabilities with frequency, and switching between equal level signal outputs with a common external audio system, or plugging phones between modules...

"clean enough for monitors" not "clean enough for headphones"?

Hi V. If your pickup is moving magnet then the sensing coils within the cartridge are unavoidably resonant at a high audio frequency. Normally this is tuned by C and damped by R. Sometimes if there is insufficient parallel C there can be an unwanted peak between 15kHz and 20kHz. This peak...

"clean enough for monitors" not "clean enough for headphones"?

No mention of alcohol ? I have a Keith Monks record cleaning machine. The cleaning mixture is 50/50 pure water/pure alcohol. Applied thru a wide but very fine brush to the rotating record. Then vacuum cleaned away. If you can't get alcohol, the nearest thing I can think of would be...

"clean enough for monitors" not "clean enough for headphones"?

You say there is a notable difference between LS and phones. If the LS system is fine then do you have some kind of a phone system distortion due to the higher frequency output caused by particles causing a non-linear response ? (Transient distortion ?) Either the LSs are deaf to this...

Finally decent vinyl playback - yay!

Hi sgrossklass University student = DIY + learning by doing ! You can increase HF by shortening the cable between cartridge and pre-amp, or adding additional shunt resistance. Try removing your present cable and inserting a diy one. If you make it as short as say two feet, then you can...

DAC Showdown: AQVOX USB 2 D/A vs. Benchmark DAC1 vs. Lavry Black DA10

Yes, interesting. The use of series capacitance assists in reducing low level shifts in single ended amplifier designs. Those shifts are channel specific, and thus not coherently related in a L-R sense. Following amplifiers and loudspeakers might be less stressed without the amplitude response...

DAC Showdown: AQVOX USB 2 D/A vs. Benchmark DAC1 vs. Lavry Black DA10

Hi Iron Dreamer ... what a competent review. Well done ! Cosmopragma also added another view on AQVOX usage. This is a unit I had been considering against a DAC-1, but now that the small Lavry has turned up - my attention changes. I agree that a remote volume control would be most...
