Most likely the cable is broken internally at the point where it leaves the 3.5mm jack. This is a common flaw of the whole Yuin lineup. Happened to me on two pairs of PK3 and one pair of PK2. After that I got fed up with Yuin and bought the Sennheiser MX 980

Out of curiosity, what has been changed in the "current PortaPro"?   Also, technically, the KSC/35 is still being sold (although only directly from koss.com), so you should include it  It's still the best of the series.
