    Dark sounding yet dynamic headphone?

    Beyer DT150 worth a look

    The Beyerdynamic DT250 Thread

Looks like DT 250 cable is same as the DT 190, which is the discontinued headset version of the DT 150 They are one-way compatible, i.e. the 6 pin cable fits into the 7 pin socket. It's a little bit tight but works (Speaking from experience of 150 and 190 only, I don't own a 250)

Get mr speakers alpha dog pads instead, they are better in every way than the stock pads They took my DT150 from clearly punching above its price to the point where I'm at my endgame and haven't bought or considered any new headphone audio hardware in years

Completely disagree with this, there is a noticeable difference with DT150 driven from onboard audio or similar compared to proper amp/dac. Don't buy the E10K, it does not drive the DT150 well. I would compare its quality and power output to macbook pro onboard audio. It's overpriced for what...

Can't go wrong with the O2 amp, I've been using that to drive my DT150 for many years. There's probably better (read: cheaper) options these days though As for DAC just buy anything with the inputs you need and good measurements. Disregard subjective reviews for DACs

For an easier upgrade, Alpha dog pads fit without any DIY (and sound incredible!)

In my mind this is the headphone to beat when it comes to sounding like high-end speakers within a reasonable price. Alpha dog pads fit perfectly and add a nice bass boost and extra clarity, night and day difference to the stock pleather

I've listened to these out of a Xonar DX (similar to your D1), and it pales in comparison to a proper amp such as the O2. As you've seen, the bass is what you lose without an amp

Confirming whether your DAC is asynchronous as claimed or not.

This is the output endpoint attributes value on the Musical Fidelity V90-DAC, which claims Async USB support:         Have I been mis-sold?

Completely agreed - the DT150 is extremely sensitive for a 250 ohm headphone and you can get remarkable volume out of onboard sound/phone/etc. But as you described the sound is a bit lacking - some frequencies get completely masked by others, and the bass doesn't quite sound right.   That...

MrSpeakers Alpha Pads actually do benefit the sound slightly (more bass), though counter-intuitively they are less comfortable than the stock pleather pads (softer yes, but more hot/sweaty than stock).   I'm not sure if I would recommend them given the cost, but they're certainly not a...

I've noticed the same, despite objective facts to the contrary my DT150 does actually seem to sound better with my O2 on high gain.   But unfortunately I listen at very low volume and the O2's volume control has to be so low (like less than 8oclock low) to maintain the same level that...

According to the designer of the O2 you should never use more gain than is necessary for your desired volume level. You're just hearing distortion, and could likely create the same effect without quality loss through eq
