I guess I am in the minority here (with apbarboza). I felt my ER-4Ps did a rather poor job at isolating airplane noise... and yes I had them inserted properly. I am going to add the HD-280 to the stable and give'em a try.

Have them both... bought the 7506 about 5 years ago, made in Japan, bought the V6 in Dec. 2006, made in China. They sound identical to me.

Yes the Shure E2 tips are a vast improvement in comfort vs. stock for Marshmallows. I think the exact name was Shure Super (or Extra??) Soft Flex tips. Got them from bhphotovideo.com. For your different ear scanal size problem, you might want to consider getting 2 pairs in different sizes...

I have them both. To me, the ER-4P sounds more refined, more detailed. It's also overall better built - for example the cables are 4x thicker than E-6's, and quite stiff. On the other hand, the tube where you attach the tips is metal for E-6, plastic for ER-4P. You get more filters, tri-flanges...

It also depends on what you plan to use them for. To me, closed cans sound better with movies or pop music than open cans.

I second jpelg's opinion. I own both the AKG501's and the HD600's. While the 501's are phenomenal with bass-light classical music, they might not have enough impact for rock music. The HD600's themselves IMO are not that great for rock music, but probably better than the 501's. Can't comment on...

I am surprised nobody mentioned the HD-600s. I do not own the KSC-35s, but I own the Porta-Pros and the HD-600s, and I found their sound signature to be quite similar (with the Pro's lateral pressure set on "Light" to attenuate the mid-bass a bit). Of course, the HD-600s have a lot more detail...

There are $250 shelf systems that are OK. You are comparing though the price of an OK shelf system with the price of VERY good headphones. A "cheap" BMW motorcycle (or Harley) can still cost more than many cars.
