If I recall correctly, they said that it was a supply issue. I don't think that it was because of another reason. I believe that the rings are solely for cosmetic purposes. The headphones are open and not enclosed with the wood, like the old Denon series for example.

The HD598 Amazon DOTD is back in stock and not backordered.  You can get it through Amazon.com directly, which states that they are in stock but the order may require an additional 1-2 days of processing.   I'm in for two pairs myself now!
