English rule "no space beetween end of sentence and exclamation / interrogation mark" is very annoying too !

Okay, as a writer...

1. If English isn't your native language, it's very easy to come off as mean, shouty, or just plain irrational with very few word substitutions. Unfortunately, there's not much I can do about this, except counsel our staff that non-native speakers may not actually be saying what they seem to be saying (and remind them that their language skills beyond English are nil--at least non-native writers are trying.)

2. By the same token, it's easy to look rather simple-minded when you're not a native English writer. It's dangerous to assume this is true, however--a language barrier does not accurately reflect the intelligence of the writer. Keep this in mind. Imagine what you'd sound like, if you tried to put together a paragraph in Spanish...or Japanese.

3. For native English speakers, however, I will go back to the no-holds-barred deconstruction of my English professors, when confronted with the poorly formatted, grammatically incorrect copy from the first generation to be taught that "feeling is everything, express yourself, don't let it hurt your self-esteem crowd." To elaborate:

"Yeah, that's great, but let me know how you do with editors, who are looking for an excuse--any excuse--to throw your manuscript in the trash can. If writing is what you want to do, you have to treat it as a job. Know the rules inside and out, and follow them unless you have a damn good reason not to. Impress your audience with your knowledge in your chosen field, rather than relying on them to translate your illegible gibberish into 'feelings' and 'meaning.'"

Fact: two spaces after the end of a sentence is from the typewriter age. Not necessary now.
Fact: spacing after punctuation would have you laughed out of any English class in the USA. It has never been a thing.
Fact: capitalizing nouns is a German thing, not English. Again, never a thing here. Nor in the UK, as far as I know.
Fact: the Oxford comma goes in and out of fashion; I was taught it, others were not.
Fact: spacing between paragraphs is correct for online formatting, as indents are not necessarily always workable--and it keeps people from going completely insane when reading your stuff
Fact: I know this isn't a writing class, and that I make plenty of grammatical errors myself.
Fact: Get a Chicago Manual of Style and follow its rules, if you give a crap about looking like a sane, well-spoken native English speaker...and know when to break the rules from time to time.

Happy writing!

Have to spend more time in Seattle by my sister to improve my poor french-flavoured english...and I fear the moment my nephew (only 3) will laugh at me 'cause of dat odd way to speak I can't help.
BTW, my old amp is weakening, your end-of-time-schiit is becoming more appealing every day

I'm a fan of the Chicago Manual of Style as well. Not that I always do it right, but that's the goal.

As to the Boston conservation of Rs -- taking them off some places and using them in others. For example, "computer data" becomes "comput-ah date-er".

No.  I work near Boston, and it's really not like that anymore.  We're a world city now.  Maybe in the outskirts like Dorchester...

Icelandic adds R to things like Baldr and bondr.  I don't know how they're pronounced.  My class on Sagas was a few years ago, and the best I could manage was to pronounce the name of the big volcano, Eyjafjallajökull.

I know bondr combined with the word for house to make husband, so I'm not sure when the rrr sound went.

You'll only find the "Boston accent" in the surrounding neighborhoods where the families date back many generations such as South Boston, Revere, Lynn, Dorchester, and even there it's a becoming a dying breed. Most people who actually live in Boston proper are transplants from other parts of the Northeast (CT, NY, NJ, PA) who were brought there by their jobs or school. There is also a surprisingly high proportion of West coasters too.

Blog Styles ,

Dis hère is "shoot from the hip" , trench warfare , no editing , slap around writing , impulsive , spontaneous , type of communication , if we didn't have automated spell check we'd see tons of spelling errors too .   We're not publishing with reworks going 5 generations  , spread-out over as many days , we're sitting at the bar with our buds , shooting the **** , Grammatical error don't mean as much as getting your points accross . Besides most are hiding behind Aliases , noooooobody actually knows who anybody else is .  It's great fun being able to murder the King's English with some flippant phrase , it's almost an Art Form as we see in the TV Series "the Wire" where Street language comprised at least 50% of spoken Dialect , the Newpaper Series was the only place where the technical English accuracy was in use .  Blogging is reinventing Communication , abbreviations are rampant , excluding the un-informed "mail-readers" who listen ( read ) , IMO ! , geez wat an expression but you see it all day long in these here blogs .  I say : let em be , they're communicating , kinda a first in this Hobby .
And for politeness , welllll , I wouldn't be able to own one of your Asgard 2s if you brandished your Company name across the front . My wife is a Minister who has visiting Ministers stopping by all the time , rude names just wouldn't do in my household were proper is Enforced , I tell em that it's an Asgard 2 , I don't tell em it's a  Schiit , they wouldn't understand and would probably outcast me .  No Sir Eee , here in Headphone land I'm a fat old guy sitting on a Blaaaaah Harley , flipping the finger at Polite Society , wearing my Black leathers , Skulls , Bones , trash talken , beer swilling ( I actually stopped drinking two decades ago ) , haven a good ol time , punctuation errors ? plezzze .
Steve King's book on Writing shows how writing is telepathy , an idea in my mind is converted to letters which another soul re-converts into the idea that I'm thinking , so : writing is transmitting complete thoughts .  Certainly there are some rules but who wants to be the Bartender that edits everything every one says before it's allowed to be said ?
The matter of spacing has to do with the tiny , crowded , smart phone screen . Tight bunching makes things difficult , 13 inch lap-top screens make things difficult too , eyesight limitations and trying to proof read ( getting rid of all the ly words before submit ) all are easier with generous spacing .  I don't think we have the luxury of multiple re-writing , nor the inclination for that matter , were trying to shoot out a response .
Still , there is a new Syndrome out there : Punctuation Neurosis ! which is charactorised by the need to focus on literary accuracy over the need to communicate , it's a bit stifling for the masses who continue to use evolved lexicons instead of  University English Department rules .
And Germanic thing : Capitolizing Nouns in the middle of a Sentence ,  hmm .  This coming from an Old German Norse outfit where the Company name is all about Potty Humor , I can't take this as being anything but a silliness , pleeeeeze .   Capitolizing Nouns is for emphasis , that's all it is and it's effective , it does get attention and emphasis .
We ain't  none of Us writing the Magna-Carta here , we're mostly Archie Bunker fun lovers , we love your Schiit , nuff said , grate stuff , for cristsake !!!

Now , that was fun , wasn't it ?
