After much debate I've decided to finally sell my much loved AKG K702’s as they don't get the kind of listening time they deserve lately and I'd rather they went to a good home where someone else can get as much enjoyment as I have from them.
The K702 have legendary status amongst the community punching far above their weight but I do think a little tweaking can make a big difference to their enjoyability. For reference I easily prefer them over the Hifiman Sundara and the Audeze LCD2c and while they may not compete with the likes of my Arya Stealth or Meze Empyrean I wouldn't say the difference is as vast as you might think!
The first thing I did was to modify them to accept a balanced cable which really helps to drive them to their full potential. They don't need crazy power but they do need more than you might think especially if you want the bass to really punch.
I've found the reasonably cheap Ifi Zen Dac drives them pretty well out of the balanced port and the 'Truebass' function really helps to fill out the low-end without muddying up the mids. However hooking up something like the Xduoo MT-604 (selling separately) improves both the dynamics and the staging even further and by setting the output to 'Variable' still allows the use of 'Truebass' and the single volume wheel.
Stock tuning with original pads is incredibly neutral with amazing speed and crazy wide staging. The included Brainwavz XL Suede pads help to elevate the bass a bit and soften the highs just enough that they become far more musical while also dramatically improving the comfort and imo improving the looks too. The soundstage is ever so slightly reduced but the vocals do become more upfront and less distant like they were before which was one of their shortcomings imo. The staging still remains close to the Arya Stealth and Meze Empyrean though which is pretty crazy considering those are soundstage kings!
I've also included a custom balanced cable which can of course be converted to single ended with a plug adapter. It's a high quality 1.5m 8 core pure OFC copper terminated with a Rean 4 pin mini XLR to 4.4mm pentaconn.
The original pads are included too and might be preferred if listening to Classical etc but I'd strongly recommend the Brainwavz for everything else unless you want a super neutral sound.
Finally just to add to the improved looks the new pads bring, I also customised the headband with a brushed metal vinyl wrap as the stock headband looked incredibly cheap with a white plastic that kind of reminded me of the plastic from a yogurt pot! I guess you could remove it if you like but personally I think it looks much better.
Selling both the stand and Xduoo MT-604 separately. Happy to do a deal on all three and combine postage.
Any questions please ask.
