I just received this Holo Audio May DAC yesterday (June 25th) after ordering from Kitsune HiFi on June 13th. I'm posting this on June 26th.

From unboxing to repacking, it's only spent 24 hours out of box. During that time, it's been in-use or burning in for about 18 hours.

The remote has been tested to function as expected (volume up/down and analog output does nothing on the May DAC).

The cables I used and can verify as good are the DC power umbilical cord and the AC power cable. I used my own USB cable.

Everything got repacked exactly as I had received it yesterday.

Asking $4,998 FIRM—I'll pick up PayPal invoice fees and UPS Ground shipping to any UPS valid delivery address in the 48 contiguous US. That's a savings of $230 over ordering from Kitsune HiFi who automatically adds $230 express shipping for drop shipping from Hong Kong.

The included UPS Ground shipping will include insurance and will require adult direct signature for drop-off.

So, why am I selling?

Short version of the story is that I was hoping to save about half the cost of my Chord TT2/M-Scaler stack, but I seem addicted to what my brain interprets as a "life like" presentation of transients and note attack from the Chord stack. I don't think any matter of "burn-in" is going to change the inherent character of the May DAC.

The May DAC in its own right is a superb DAC with some great flexibility with the non-oversampling and 3 additional oversampling modes. The NOS mode has the most unique presentation that it seems most Holo Audio DAC owners love. If I never heard the Chord sound, I would definitely consider the May DAC as TOTL. However, it became clear that I'm the odd one out because I gravitated toward the OS DSD mode…because it's closer to my preferred presentation of attacks and transients.

What everyone says about soundstage breadth and depth is true in what I experienced with the May DAC, but my bias puts tone, timbre, and texture of notes as a priority—which I get from the Chord stack in my setup. However, there is a magic about the soundstage of the May DAC that's just impressive, and a tone that is seductive. It's just I don't perceive it as true as the Chord sound.

PHOTOS

Apologies for the blurry front shot. Took the photos a few hours ago when it was daylight and didn't notice the front shot is blurry until now when getting ready to post. The units are packed up, but if anyone would like clear photos, I'm happy to unpack to take more photos.

* heads-up for the buyer…you need to plug in the DC umbilical cord like this shot before plugging in the AC cable—there's warnings several places in the package, on the cable, in the manual—but it's worth repeating :)

Based on my experience with the Spring 2 KTE, I think "seductive" is a good word to describe this DAC. I found the tone to be frankly ultimate but agree transient speed not a focus, but that's why it's so nonfatiguing. More than any other piece of gear it made me cry very often, the emotionality is extremely strong. I am tempted but for now I think I have to say GLWS and free bump for your sale.

Many thanks, vgmusics! Yeah, NOS mode has an extremely beautiful sound. It gave my Harbeth's a sound no other DAC has ever made them produce, and that's saying something because a lot of DAC's have been trialed through the years.

Maybe some day in the distant future I can convince my wife (and myself) that keeping both is a good thing. 😂 …then again with that investment the DAVE or Bartok would be within reach. 🤔

Wow, I guess sorry wouldn't be the right response. I'm curious since you said you preferred the Chord TT2/MScaler Combo better? I am an owner of the TT2/MScaler and a new owner of the Chord DAVE/MScaler combo. I have ordered the Holo May KTE and hope I enjoy both?

I had the the Qutest and this DAC is pretty different to other things. I am confident that you will enjoy both of them for different reasons if you have the funds and shelf space to do so. Personally I might have rather have two DACs than two amps if this DAC is one of them. They hold their value extremely well as you can see, in the event you sell later.

The May—especially in NOS mode—is a different flavor for sure. I'm not one to keep different flavors in the house. Aside from an occasional aspiration for variety, which I never end up using, I've always been more of a 1 setup person.

Congratulations on the DAVE/Mscaler! That is bound to be an awesome combo. "Triode User" just gained access to a May DAC, and he has a mDAVE setup that's been augmented by a Sean Jacobs DC4 LPS that he swears is a significant step improvement over the stock PSU for the DAVE. It might be something you might want to look into? "Triode User" has been active on the An exploration of Chord DAVE… thread started by "GoldenOne".

"Damascato" just received a May in and he has an mTT2 stack. He's been posting on the Holo Audio May DAC Speculation thread.

Incidentally, at the investment points you're at, you're well within range of the Mola Mola Tambiqui and dCS Bartok. Any inclinations towards those DAC's?

No, I've heard the Bartok and the Vivaldi. To be honest I was not overly impressed. I'm not saying they're no good, I just think the sound was not as impressive as the price tag. I have not heard the Tambiqui, personally. But I think with the May and DAVE/Mscaler combo I should be satisfied for the foreseeable future?

I wonder if anyone has tried using the MScaler + Holo May KTE and what benefits (if any) that provides?

That's good to hear on the dCS DAC's. Part of me had imagined that might be the case.the DAVE?Mscaler would be my next step I believe. Probably next year for me.

Not sure about the May + Mscaler. I believe GoldenOne tried and in his YouTube reviews he leans towards HQPlayer's algo's. I prefer the convenience of the Mscaler, myself, and I am very happy with the output. It's truly set and forget for me, whereas with the HQPlayer, I need to bother with various algorithms and sorting out processor loads. Some people go so far as to setup GPU processing. Fun for those who are into it. I enjoy not thinking about the gear after I settle in with a setup. :)
