Just wanted to say GLWS! These are awesome cans and even though the MDR-M1ST is the top of the Sony monitor range now, I still think the MDR-7520 is the better headphone. I own and love both.

That’s the same hard case I use, too! Cheers, bud. :)

Thanks for your kind words! I actually wanted to buy the MDR-M1ST to try it out but since you mentioned that the MDR-7520 is better, you just spared me the hassle :)

The M1ST is great! It’s the headphone I bring with me 9 out of 10 times when I’m out, but when I make the extra effort to bring out the case-clad 7520 and I hear that crystal-clear bass slam, I remember why the 7520 is such an underrated headphone.

I feel it’s Sony’s best attempt yet at nailing the studio monitor (speaker) sound. Before the 7520, I used an SRH1540. The Shure was more comfortable and premium. Its bass response was similar in quantity to the MDR7520, but the texture wasn’t there.

The M1ST has good low end (mids and treble, too) but it can’t touch the 7520. I couldn’t say why the 7520 never got the attention it deserved. I guess it wasn’t flashy enough; it’s kind of understated.

YMMV but with good amp (Lehmann is my go-to) behind the 7520, it really feels like anything more expensive is icing on the cake. :smile_phones:

The way you say it makes me feel like I'm making a mistake selling the 7520! Like you, I would pick the 7520 over SRH1540 and DT1770. I never felt the need to drive it with an amp as it sounds great even from phone.

I'm a big fan of the MDR line! I use the 7506, 7520, 7550 and now the M1ST. To this day, 7520 is still my fav. Haha.

I won't say it's a mistake to sell, but getting one again could be harder than replacing something like the Shure or Beyer you mentioned. I agree that it's very easy to drive the 7520. A beefy amp gives you more of what's already there, but it's not that necessary.
