Hello all. Up for your consideration is a Bottlehead Crack tube amp with the Speedball upgrade in good condition.
*This amp is semi-finished, meaning that electronically, it is fully assembled. The amp is fully functional. However, the wooden case is unfinished and adhesive [& optionally wood stain or paint] will need to be added to complete the build*
I am an electronics and wood-working novice. That's why I bought an amp with a fully-built electronics portion: I wanted to at least be able to hear this beauty. As mentioned, the amp works. Like fully. And, boy, does it sound amazing! The Bottlehead Crack with Speedball Upgrade is definitely special!
However, because it has not been glued together, you have to be careful when using the device. Foolishly, I thought that I would be able to easily add the adhesive and wood stain, but this always seemed a little out of my league and I never got to it.
Most importantly, I don't use it often enough to justify keeping it. I truly enjoy this tube amp but because it is an OTL, it plays best with with high impendance cans. Of the 2 I currently own, I find myself preferring to listen to them balanced and the Crack is only single-ended. I also have a thing about not wanting to keep gear that I don't give enough "love."
Along with a power cable, it also comes with a Red label RCA 6848 tube for the back slot. In the front, a Sylvania 6SN7 tube is used with the help of the included 6SN7 to 12AU7 adapter. Also, I prob have a couple more random tubes that are compatible with the Crack around the house.
Between the Speedball upgrade and the adapters that are compatible with the Crack, the different sound signature available from different tubes is nearly infinite! This flexibility makes this amp one of the most versatile and customizable audio tools I know of.
I figure that this amp is too good to not be putting to good use. I'm sure that someone with even a little bit of handywork skills could easily allow this little gem to reach it's ultimate form.
This tube amp is both warm, enveloping and buttery smooth.
This is one of the best tube amps I have heard. If you own a high-impedance headphone [HD 6XX, T1, DT880, etc] you owe it to yourself to try this amp out! Highly recommended.
