ATH-M50 Studio Monitor Headphones, great for portable use

Posted

Pros: Good isolation, good midrange, quite nice soundstage for a closed back headphone, price/performance, sturdy, rotating cups, great looks? , portable

Cons: Heavy non detachable cable, horrible earpads, high clamping pressure, muffled and overemphasised bass, metallic treble

The ATH-M50 headphones are one of the most recommended headphones on the Internet. Sure they do sound quite good as for a 200$ headphone, but there are far better sounding headphones in the same price range. In my opinion coiled cable headphone version is more bulky than the straight cable version and adds an unnecessary weight. I have both versions of these headphones and I can say that the straight cable version is much much nicer.   Sound: Bass: bass is overemphasised, muffled, loose I would rate it 6/10 and use EQ to bring it down a bit. Midrange: the midrange is very nice when bass is EQ'd down, I would rate midrange 9.5/10. Treble: treble has poor detail, quite...

Incredible sound

Pros: Very balanced, great mids, great highs, classy looks, bass is balanced

Cons: headband, sub-bass is a bit lacking, sound-stage could be better

I'll make this really short (because of my poor writhing skills)   Bass - bass is good but I find sub-bass a bit lacking. 9.5/10   MIDS - Wow, incredible mids. But sometimes it feels that there is to much of mids. 11/10   Highs - really smooth and detailed and not as harsh as other headphones like DT990 or DT880. 10/10   Sound-stage - I find sound-stage to be lacking :( and probably not as quick as I expected when I first bought them. 8/10   Comfort - really great comfort, no issues except for the adjustment part. 9.5/10   Overall: I find these headphones to be amazing, but they are quite picky, and I find it hard to listen to mp3s.

Great headphones

Pros: Great value, smooth mids, quite neutral, great build quality, punchy bass, nice soundstage, easy to drive, nice design, details, can be EQ'd

Cons: Loosy bass response, very overpowering lower and upper bass response, METALLIC HIGHS, clamping pressure, quite heavy, detachable cable would be nice

Audio-Technica ATH-M50S are really great headphones for the price, but are definitely not the best cans out there. In my opinion these headphones have a lot flaws. Biggest flaw is the bass response. It's great for metal and hip hop, but even though I'm quite of a BASSHEAD, I find the bass to be too lossy, and really overpowering the mids and the highs, especially when listening to Pink Floyd . Sure if you are listening through a computer or a phone or any source that has an EQ it can be easily fixed by lowering the low frequencies. But there is one thing that I couldn't fix is the harsh, metallic treble. Even after 300 hours usage these cans still have treble problem which is unbearable...
