Headphone Inventory

Some brief thoughts and rating of the headphones I've owned before. Completely subjective.

Currently Own:

Headphones:

Koss TBSE - W/ M50 pads(7.3): Slightly lacking bass extension and shy in mid bass. Lacks body and overall bass presence. Forward and slightly aggressive mids but nicely detailed. Slightly sibilant treble with good extension. Average soundstage.

Koss KSC14(3.5): Severely lacking in overall bass. Forward slightly forward mids. Smooth and present treble but lacks extension. Almost no soundstage

AKG Q701(9): Good sub-bass extension with acceptable presence. Flat bass. Forward and textured mids. Rarely sibilant, slightly fatiguing on some tracks. Treble with very good extension and presence. Very good soundstage.

ATH A900x(9.1): Very good sub-bass extension with decent presence. Flat bass. Forward and textured mids. Very slightly sibilant treble with very good extension and presence. Average soundstage.

IEM:

JVC FXT90(7.7): Strong bass presence but slightly lacking extension. Bass is punchy and fast. Mid presence slightly lacking. Smooth treble with good extension and presence. Slightly below average soundstage.

TTPOD T1-E(7.6): Similar to FXT90 in most aspects but it has slightly less mid bass impact and very slightly more sub presence. Slightly brighter due to the slightly more mid presence but both still has a dark overall presentation. Imaging and instrument separation is noticeably better on the FXT90 but not by a big margin.

XiaoMi Pistons II(6.6): Bloated bass and slightly unpleasant. Good extension, punchy and good quickness. Bass does bleed to the recessed mids slightly. But the mids still have good amount of detail. Treble is smooth, sparkly, extended and never sibilant. Soundstage slightly below average.

(Broken)UE600(7.2): Bass has acceptable extension with very slight mid bass hump. Slightly lacking body. Sweet and prominent mids with nice detail. Smooth treble with decent extension and airy. Good soundstage.

Owned:

NuForce NE-770X(3): Lack sub-bass extension but overwhelming bass presence. Very recessed mid. Severely lacking treble presence and extension. Almost no soundstage.

Bose OE2(6.4): Decent sub-bass extension with very strong overall bass. Recessed mids. Smooth treble with decent extension and presence. Acceptable soundstage.

JVC Flats(7.0): A touch of mid bass hump but slightly lacking bass extension. Textured and slightly recessed mids. Smooth treble with decent extension and presence. Decent soundstage.

Monoprice 8320(5.5): Flat bass with acceptable extension and lacking texture. Forward nor recessed mids but slightly lacking texture. Smooth treble with acceptable extension. Acceptable soundstage.

ATH M50(8.2): Acceptable sub-bass extension with strong overall bass and texture. Recessed but textured mids. Smooth highs with good extension. Above average soundstage.

Skullcandy S6SKDZ(4.5): Excellent bass extension and presence but severely lacking texture and control. Mid lack texture and presence. Smooth treble with very poor extension. Poor soundstage.

Music Preferences

Jpop, Vocal, Jazz, Instrumentals, Orchestra, Acoustic, Trip-Hop

My signature preference:
I enjoy having a tight, extended, and punchy bass with a touch of bass hump. But mids are the most important for me. Vocals have to sound natural, textured and not at all shouty. Treble need to have well extended, sparkly, smooth, and never sibilant. Soundstage has to be round and big as possible.
