Headphone Inventory

I feel fortunate to own the TH900 and D7000, two of the best dynamic phones ever created, and they are improved further with the help and expertise of Mark Lawton and the Q French Silk cable gang. I'll sell every other headphone before considering either of these two.
*Fostex TH-900 - with Q French Silk cable installed by BTG Audio, and in late March 2014 was Lawton modded by MarkL himself (incredible sound and bass!) - the builders of the D7000 before Denon lost their mind. A great headphone that looks as good as it sounds. A twin of my D7000 (not identical twin, fraternal). :-)
*Denon MD-7000 - w/ Q French Silk cable installed by BTG Audio, Lawton modded & angle pads, outstanding sound with perfect bass! A TH900 with the Denon name badge. Seriously cannot imagine better sound.
*Denon LA-2000 - Lawton mods throughout, Cocobolo Rosewood cups by Martin Custom Audio, D5K shortened cable and Alpha pads, great looking and sounding, also very close in sound to the D7000. The cups are gorgeous............
*Denon D600 - very close to the earlier Denon's - certainly very close in overall sound with great bass and comfort. Isolates better and the bass out of a vintage amp is epic.

*Sennheiser HD700 - auditioned them on the HeadAmp tour and when hooked up to the Spec system they were amazing. Bass a plenty and crystal clarity that made me pause and realize an open back Sennheiser DOES have bass and are more capable than many give them credit for. Comfort is unmatched by any headphone I've ever worn. By far.

*Ultrasone Pro900 w/Alpha pads - a truly amazing basshead phone - sounds great and Alpha pads top it off. Ultrasone's best headphone from those I have auditioned or owned (Edition 8, Sig Pro, Sig DJ). It's that good.

*M-Audio Q-40 w/Alpha pads. Punches way over its cost.

*JVC HAM-55X - if they sounded as good as they looked they would be interesting................unfortunately they sound terrible. Need to gift them to some young un.

*Bose AE2 - damn good sound with proper amping aka a vintage amplifier.

Sennheiser PMX 680
Bose IE2
JVC HACX3

Sold/traded/given away -
*Phillips Fidelio X1 again.............second time. It just was getting zero head time and found a deal on a HD700 for $500 for my at home office open headphone.
*Beats Studio - though they were better than my old V-Moda M100 but sold them to a buddy at work who loves Beats.
*Logitech UE6000 - got it for $80 brand new for use as my outdoor portable since I sold the M100. Sold as I'm still looking for the perfect portable and haven't found it yet.
*Sennheiser HD7 DJ - heavy bass, isolation, comfort, looks and what appears to be amazing build quality. Just was too bassy and not good enough overall sound so sent them back.
*V-Moda M-100 Shadow w/ XL pads - sold my first one due to comfort issues but with the XL pads these are now my go to portable solution. Well done on the improvement but got bored with it so sold it, paid for my Beats AND a headphone recable on my D7000.
*Denon D5000 - loved almost as much as my D7000 but combined with selling the Edition 8 to buy a TH900. Worth it.
*Ultrasone Edition 8 - great portable solution, comfort and isolation to rival anything. Sold to get TH900. Worth it.
*Panasonic RP-HTF600 - same deal as the JVC's below, great sound for the price but got no head time.
*JVC SA-500 - great little bass monster but just no head time.
*Phillips Fidelio X1 - loved the sound, sold to help finance different gear. Was my first and only open headphone
*Darth Beyer V3XD - just too many headphones, had an opportunity to buy a D5000 with custom wood cups so off it went
*V-Moda M-100 - fit issues, tired of waiting for XL pads. Ended up buying another when the XL pads came out.
*Skullcandy Aviators - decent, just would never get any headtime
*CAL - actually a very good portable solution that I liked a lot. No headtime either.
*XB700 - good sound, great bass but alas the other quality phones soon made me forget all about them.
*Skullcandy Crusher subwoofer - gave to my 15 year old nephew - made his day.
*JVC HARX-700 - low cost, low performance. Decent and that's about it.
*Audio Technica WS-99 - meh - don't get the hype - cheap feeling, bad stock pads, decent sound but not stellar.
*Ultrasone Signature Pro - fantastic sound - pad comfort lacking - traded for D7000.
*Sony XB500 - the original bass cannon - thought they were good at one time (before D2K, D600, Sig Pro, etc).
*V-Moda Crossfade - decent portable with good bass.

Auditioned -
*Audeze LCD-XC - heaviest damn headphone I've ever used. For $1700 they sounded nowhere near as good as my D7000 or TH900. Maybe it's the Planar Bass but I don't get a thump like I crave. Check them off the list.........never.
*Dido 901B - great basshead phone with thump to spare. Pads not great, fit not great, just a good phone that doesn't quite measure up to say a D7000 on having ALL the boxes checked.
*Sennheiser HD700 - running it out of my vintage Spec system, they sound amazing with more than adequate bass. Very comfy, nice tight clamp, could easily see myself with a pair of these.
*Fostex TH600 - outstanding headphone, the clone of my D7000 side by side. Out of vintage the bass is epic.
*Ultrasone Signature DJ - great portable basshead phone but I still like Denon's better.
*Mr Speakers Alpha Dog - outstanding headphone, has all the bass I wanted. Loved it but likely won't be buying. Really the best fully isolating headphone I've tried.

Headphone Amp Inventory

Vintage -
*Pioneer system from 1977/1978 - Spec 1 pre-amp, Spec 2 amp (250 WPC), TX9500 II tuner, SG-9500 Equalizer, Yamaha P-520 turntable, Pioneer PDR609 CD player/recorder, fed by an iPod Touch 3G into a NuForce iDo DAC running EQ10 or Pandora and sounding amazing, volume controlled by a Chase RLC-1 remote! Waited 50 years to own a system like this.............worth the wait. Amazing is all I can say. Usually listen to the speakers but when I don't, I have my TH900's or D7000's with full Lawton mods, angle pads and Q French Silk cabling.

*Speakers - Cerwin Vega DX-3 on the Spec system, Klipsch KG 3.2, Yamaha NS-4, Cerwin Vega L7 bookshelfs, Polk Audio bookshelfs

*Pioneer SA-7500 MKII integrated amp from 1978 45 wpc. In my family room as main headphone listening station.
*2 - Kenwood KA-5700 integrated amps from 1978 as well 40 wpc - one in home office fed by a HP G60 laptop--->FiiO D5 DAC--->KA-5700---> Advent bookshelf speakers or Pro900 headphones, the other one feeding a speaker system in my family room fed by an iPhone 3G---->Polk Audio bookshelfs.
*Realistic STA-64B receiver - mint condition from 1977 - anchors my work office system, fed by a Lenovo Yoga 2 PC ---> FiiO E-10 DAC ---> STA-64B ---> either an Altec Lansing 2.1 system with sub or D600/D2000 headphones. Being at work I can only get an hour or so on the headphones so listening to the speakers 8-9 hours is the option.
*Fisher CA-880 integrated amp - 100 wpc from 1981 - running my garage TV audio system with my Yamaha RX670 as the preamp.
*Yamaha R700 receiver from 1979 - in the garage running audio system fed by a Sony CD player and/or a HP Netbook via a NuForce uDac2 DAC.
Arrow 3G - best portable basshead amp I've tried
