||My "audiophile" aspirations are limited by hearing loss from age and military service.
|Interests (Hobbies, favorite activities, etc.):
||Precision adult air guns; fishing; riding motorcycles; listening to music; reading.
|What I do for a living:
||Pick up my pension check from the State of Illinois!
||Shure SRH-840, Shure SRH750DJ, Sony MDR-V6, Etymotic HF5 and Etymotic MC3 for leisurely listening. While I'm working out, I use the Polk UltraFit 2000 on-the-ear model. I really need SWEATPROOF 'phones when I'm exercising!
|Headphone Amp Inventory
||HeadRoom Total AirHead; HeadRoom Micro; Fournier HTA-2.
||For serious listening, I prefer my Teac CD-P650 compact disc player with CDs - although it will also allow me to use my 6th gen iPod Nano, too, and it has a built-in DAC to clean up the apple bits before my ears ingest them. For listening while I exercise, I use the Nano. For listening while I'm writing, surfing the Web, etc., I use my MacBook.
||When I need an extension (so I can escape the dogs and/or television!), I use a 10' or 20' Planet Waves straightline cable. I did an A/B comparison with a Grado extension cable before I purchased - and, although the Grado cost twice as much, I couldn't discern any difference. [Keep in mind that I have some tolerable, but complex, hearing loss from lobbing lots of mortar shells without hearing protection!]
||None, aside from a stout APC surge protector.
|Other Audio Equipment
||I do my "open listening" via a set of Bose 901 speakers, a McIntosh MA6450 integrated amplifier, a Yamaha CDC665 compact disc player; and a Polk Audio XM Satellite Radio receiver. The system is connected via a set of custom cables produced for me years ago by Hi Fi Fo Fum in St. Louis, Missouri.
||I enjoy listening to all types of music, with the exception of opera and those forms of modern jazz and experimental/noise artistry that lack a readily discernible rhythm and melody. My one musical "addiction" is the Allman Brothers Band. I'm also attracted to music where there are lots of layers and lots of background activity in a wide soundstage [such as Thompson Twins, Chemical Brothers, Cherry Poppin' Daddies, etc.]. I'm also a sucker for catchy dance music - especially clever remixes of pop hits.
||I enjoy reading about "high-end" home audio systems and, especially, the esoteric hypotheses and squirrely research underlying some of them! Sorry, but I'm a statistician and a cynic, so I'm never impressed by claims that defy scientific logic and the fundamental requirements of acceptable experimental designs.
