One cable has a three-button inline mic/remote for use with iPhones/iPads/iPods (like other such mic/remotes, it also works with as a remote control with my various MacBook models). The other cable is a plain, audio-only cable. (Both cables terminate are terminated with a 3.5mm stereo mini plug.)
