I've got the E3s for a few days now, and like them very much, there character soundwise matchesm y taste, and they are comfortable.
But here is what puzzles me:
I also own(ed) the E2, Sharp 33s, Sony 70&71.
With none of these phones I had trouble finding the right tip, and always obtained a good seal and good sound immedeately.
Not so with the E3; using the gray silicone tips I get a very good seal (they 'pop' when I remove them), yet not enough bass.
Using the transparant tips, I don't get a good seal at all, and again, no bass. The samesized E2 tipson the E2 work perfectly.
Using the 71 tips (with the usual 'brokhen'-mod) I get a seal so good that they turn inside out when I remove them, reasonable bass and a rather sharp high, and not enough isoalation. While this same mod works perfectly on the E2.
Using the foamies I get a perfect, solid sound, with a lovely weighty bass and silky treble, good dynamics and 'musical detail' (as opposed to analytical).
Microphonics and occlusion differ too with the tips (generally less troubling with the E3 then with other phones).
But other have reported quite different preferences, f.i. many people seem very happy with the gray tips.
Differnt ears, different players, different music, different taste of course, but on no other phone have I experienced so wildly different soundquality depending on the tips.
I believe 'm not alone in this; I heart people complaining about the E3 sounding sharp, too bassy, no bass at all, rolled of high's etc.
Pity appearantly it is the foamies for my; they get dirty, have to be replaced regularly and look stupid when dangling.
So choosey phones then, but once I got it right, I forgave them everything.
My advice obviously has to be to experiment and listen carefully and not just believe that a good seal automatically gives the best sound.
Now where can I order those foamies for a reasonable price?
