The phones included with my Sony Walkman are superb

Thread Starter
I just bought a Sony SRF-59 AM FM Walkman radio. I tried the Koss Porta Pro2 and was severely disappointed with the bloated bass.

Now I'm listening to the Sony headphones included with the $13 Walkman, the Sony MDR-023. They are superb, with great tonal balance. The imaging and soundstaging are phenomenal. There are at least three places filled on the soundstage during the present song, the rhythm guitar on the right, the vocals in the middle, and the drummer on the left. The bass is balanced; these phones are wonderful.

What's going on here?

Well, there could be two explanations.

1) You need to see an ear/brain doctor immediately; if they act quickly perhaps you can be helped. Post-Operative Psycho-Accoustical Rehabilitation is both indicated and recommended.

2) you are the mythical induhvidual for whom sony design cheap headphones, and whose ear shape and hearing are perfectly matched to those designs. Congratulations; your options for great sounding headphones will be endless.

To me, (at least) this sounds not unreasonable at all .

Well, so this little headphone can do left, middle and right... very good soundstaging!!! Hope you're joking... Every headphone can do this. I think the great soundstage you hear is caused by some other thing than only R and L separation.

However, I have the Koss PortaPro, which I think sounds very close (if not the same) to the PortaPro2: i can't imagine an headphone for their price which will sound better (except the Sennheiser PX100, which does not sound better, it sounds at the same very high level). But I have to admit that they have a bassy sound that someone could not like it.

And Sony sometimes (especially in the past) did some very very good things in small supra-aural desing headphones: I'm thinking of the MDR-40 MDR-44 (which I had) and similar. The sound of this small and "shy" headphones sometimes is very musical and surprising (for the price). But I don't know about the current models.

Bye

Well, someone's having fun in this thread, eh? Then I'll bite.

I used to have a few pairs of the MDR-023 which came with a few of my Sony portable players. I'm clearly the opposite of the OP in this case - the "bass" on those Sonys are of the boomy, boxy one-note variety that doesn't go at all deep (it drops off severely below 80Hz). The highs are severely muffled and a bit screechy, as well. And the mids? Well, honky they are! In other words, I felt that they're mediocre at best.

amartignano,
As far as Sony's current small supra-aural open-air headphones, the most expensive that they make is the MDR-301LP, which is nowhere near in the same price class as the older higher-end discontinued Sony open-air supra-aural minis. It sounded a bit bloated and a bit muffled compared to the Koss and Sennheiser supra-aural open-air headphones at the same price point.

April Fools already?

I have a pair and they are the epitome of the plague of stock headphones. Have you heard anything else besides the Portapros? Even they should be better..

I have a feeling you will be in for a treat when you invest a bit in this hobby

Sorry to hear that. Sony had a long and good tradition from the 80s in little supraural good sounding headphones. It's a pitty they "forgot" this...

I know this is a little off topic, but does anyone here know of a site that has pictures of old Sony headphones that are out of production? I had some great cheap sonys that I baught in 1998 but I don't have them anymore. I just want to know what model I had.

I suggest that you run far away from this site.

If you are satisfied with those headphones, there's no reason why you should spend more money to address your music needs.

Don't listen to anyone here: if you are happy with the included ear buds, stick with them! I bet most of the people on this site are dissatisfied with their hundred/thousand dollar rigs in one way or another...

What's going on is you have lo-fi tastes. Don't listen to all the critics...let them spend up to thousands of dollars, while you enjoy your music and save a bundle.
