Perhaps I'm cynical but I get tired of listening to the same tired old lyrics about love. I think that whatever can be said about it has already been said and lyrics do not give me any new insights. I am listening to more and more Chopin and Liszt solo piano music as there are no words to get in the way of the music.

I'd like some suggestions on electronica/trance/ambient/dance music that has either very minimal or no lyrics. I love the sound of synthesizers. I also love the sound of Beck's "Midnight Vultures" - most of the lyrics on that are not to bad except for the last song about meeting Jenny at J.C. Penny.

Thanks for your suggestions!!!

Hi CHOPIN

Taking some time out from composing and being dead to join our little forum, huh?

Dunno about the whole dance/electronica thing as much, but if you want good music sans lyrics try some instrumental jazz. Avoid the vocal stuff 'cos most of it's the "I'm so sad since that man of mine left me"kind of thing. I'd suggest more modern stuff like St Germain and Ronny Jordan based on your desire for electronica, etc (though neither really fit anywhere near that classification), but given the classics you are currently listening to I'd also say check out anything more trad like Miles Davis (especially Kind of Blue) or John Coltrane.

No soppy vox, just all superbly crafted music.

Cheers,
Hamsta

PS - Groove Armada's Vertigo might be worth a look as long as you don't consider "I see you baby, Shakin' that @$$" a "silly love song"

hamsta: as immature as that last comment/recc. was - it made me laugh - I dislike that song with a vengeance.....

I too would reccomend some intstrumental jazz - Kind of Blue by Miles Davis and Blue Train by John Coltrane come to mind. Time Out by Dave Brubeck is also highly rated...

I'm for more sappy-ass love songs. Stevie-B, "One more time" -- non-stop. Or L.L. Cool J, "I need love". Don't even get me started. My eyes well up with tears from start to end.

Ah coolvij, tell me about it! I bought the CD about 4 months before it became popular in the mass market and would tend to skip past said track as I found it not only inane and, as you say, immature, but also incredibly musically boring! Imagine my shock and horror when 4 months later "I see you baby" is rattling the airwaves with little-to-no mention of the rest of what is actually a very good CD! Glad to know the comment was taken in the vein it was intended. I worry sometimes about how NZ humour translates to Ammerican ears.

And how could I forget Dave?! If anyone has an HDCD-capable player I can thoroughly recommend the recent reissue of Time Out. The CD cover and liner notes make no mention of it being an HDCD, but it is. The reissue of Kind of Blue is an absolute "must have" - I remember the multiple threads about it on Headwize. I went and got myself a new copy and can fully back-up all the recommendations. Definitely worth updating your old copy if you have one. I know that a few Coltrane CDs have been reissued recently, like Clotrane Jazz and Giant Steps (the ones in the carboard sleeves from Atlantic), but does anyone know if Blue Train has also been rereleased?

Cheers
Hamsta

Hamsta: Your NZ humour was taken in quite fine by me, lol. Don't worry about that....

Blue Train was reissued as "Ultimate Blue Train." My oh my! For such an old recording, it sounds EXCELLENT!!! Like a good modern recording! I say - GO OUT AND BUY IT!
