Triports do look nice, but the sound appeal soon fades. I don't think you have to be an audiophile to realize they're not the end all and be all.

Actually, E3/cs are flatter than other cans in my collection. Granted, they aren't the Stax or Orpheus or the like, but E3s (by their virtue of being in-ear monitors) are flat, for lack of a better word. Colored would be the last word I'd use with E3s. E2s on the other hand...

The PXC250s have been mentioned, and for what's its worth, the price is about half of the Q2Cs, or about $50 less than MSRP of Shure E3s.

Then there are the various sundry noise cancellers, including the obligatory ones from Sony (and a pair based on EX70s), Panasonic, and Philips, anywhere from $50-150 in range.

The E5cs I believe were very uncolored, accurate, and detailed, which made them great for constructing sounds on my Novation KS. However, this didn't translate into superior reproduction of music.

Hmm, while I love getting all this advice, now I'm more lost than ever. While I always thought I have a discriminating ear, I don't know if all these subtle differences between the headphones will have much of an effect on me. Basically I want a comfortable set of closed headphones that could travel. Seems like the Bose QC2s might still be the best option, even if the HD280s are the better deal. Would you all agree, given that I'll never amp these headphones?

Just get the QuietComforts. If you decide the sound isn't good enough, return them within 30 days and try something more geared towards audiophiles. Chances are you'll really like the QuietComforts and enjoy the noise canceling and great fit which are really hard to beat.

I'll second this.

Woah dude, you gotta relax. It was a typo!

If YOU took the time to read MY thread, you would have found that The QC1s don't cost 300 dollars. You could have just politely pointed out, "You mean the QC2's, right?"..

My turn to roll some eyes

Congratulations, by the way - you are the first person to enter my ignore list.

Just another log for the fire: I own a pair of Bose QC2s, and the headphone stem on the left side has broken now in two places from normal use. I think the headphones are good on the plane (they really do reduce the drone of the engine), but their quality is somewhat disappointing and they cannot be used without a battery (and are very annoying when the battery is low).

I'm now looking for a replacement: something I can listen to at work. And I'm looking a headphone amp -- damn this place!

once the 280's are broken in properly, the sound they produce combined with the huge isolation is... AWESOME

im a professed HD280 fanboi though, so take that as you will... If the room isnt 100% silent i wont even consider putting my HD600's on, ill just keep the 280's rockin.

Is $100 (on Amazon) a good price for the HD280s? How do they compare with the HD590s (besides the open and closed difference)? Thanks!
