I think im going to go with the Shure E3c's. From what you guys have said they are a really good sounding set of buds. Only thing that i was wondering was if they are really worth the money over the MD33s... I dont exactly have all that much but ill splurge to have a decent pair and get it behind me. Any comments?

The E5c, the higher-end dual-driver Shure canal-phone, did not impress me. The character is similar to the iPod earbuds...obviously the E5c was more accurate and detailed, but you have to listen for it. Take it for what it's worth.

[edit] I'll add that I used them for a week and tried to like them, but really found it difficult. They have some nice qualities, but for the high price you pay, hardly worth it. I would call the sound "decent" definitely, and I suppose the E3 also sounds decent, but not much beyond that.

You have to balance up what it is you want from a headphone. If you're not going anywhere (like it seems to be in the case of justanotheruser) then there's not much point in having canalphones as their physical attributes (portability, isolation, etc) are lost on you. The Shure E3c and Etymotic ER-6i are fairly generic in fit, but the Shure E5 due to their fit also requires a little thought in tuning. It was easy for me to figure out, but perhaps not as easy for others.

So is this for fully portable use?

My real issue was with the sound. (I complained a lot about the fit, but actually I would have managed if I they were delivering the goods.) Even after cramming the triflanges way too deep, getting the most direct, sealed connection with the E5 possible, they sounded pretty bad.

Also, I did need a portable phone, but if $400 portables more or less sound the same as $40 portables, it seems like a waste of money...especially when it takes so much concentration to hear the extra detail they reveal...not something you can do on the move. I'll probably stick with cheapo portables and invest in something I can actually appreciate.

Plz don't take offense, bangraman...I don't mean to discount your opinion. Though I think I come across that way.

I returned my E3s and got EX71s, and i'm very happy I did. MD33s should be even better, I went with EX71s because I didn't want to bother with the sharp extension cord for using it on a standard 3 pole plug.

Mmmm ok.

Well i have heard from alot of people here that the shure e3c's sound much better than the ex71s. And you are saying that the md33's sound better? That just goes against popular opinion.

Edit: You have used both the ex71's and the md33's... but which would you say is better? (I like clarity and warm sound, but also like bass...) Maybe a quick comparison between the two?

Here something you learn when hanging here most people hear differently and some have vasly different preference in sound. There is a lot of hate/love relationship with canalphones

One thing to do, which can be difficult to a newbie, is to try to get an idea of the taste of every reviewer, [I guess it's only possible by reading a lot of post] and as much information as posible about the sound signature of the phones so you may put comments in perspective and try to choose what fit your taste best

The other way around is try to describe your taste as much as possible and what you think you like as sound signature, so people can recommand.

In the end you will only know when you hear the headphones.

I love my E3cs. My taste is "I'm not a detail freak or a basshead." I like the "fun" sound of my DT440s (a little groovy if you know what I mean).

There are some issues with the E3c and as an owner of course I know these issues. However, among canalphones, the E3cs have the greatest advantages in every category: sound quality, comfort, ease of use and, perhaps most importantly, price. ($120ish as opposed to E5c $340+)

I like how my E3cs sound with my iPod both amped and unamped (with the E3c there's not a huge difference that I can tell between amped and unamped with a MINT amp, it's a little more apparent using my PIMETA though). They are comfortable; I can and have worn them for hours on end.

So, if you've got my taste and you like "fun" sound but aren't quite a basshead yet, E3cs would be good for you. If you like mega bass, go with the EX71s that Commando threw out or the MD33s (they have slightly less bass than the EX71 though, but it's better bass). If you are a crazy analyze-my-music true audiophile... ER-4Ps are the only real choice.

Canal phones are very subjective. I've only heard E3 and EX71, and I much preferred the EX71 as to my ears they offered superiour sound in every way. I like strong highs though, which the EX71s have and the E3s don't, so much. Maybe with an EQ I would have liked them more?

The best bet is to buy what you think you'll like, but buy from a place with a good return policy - the head-fi sponsors are usually good like that.
